DJs are required to have insurance?

Seriously? In order to get a gig, you have to have insurance? This is all according to my school.

It's a very smart idea though.

They are prolly just making sure they cover their asses. If something happens to your stuff you could ultimately 'try' to hold them liable and compensate you for any damaged equipment.

Like other said, it's ALWAYS a good idea to have insurance on your stuff. But, if you insist not getting it, or can't get it by the time you want to spin for them, ask to sign some sort of disclaimer. Just remember though...if something happens, it's your fault

They mean liability insurance, and could care less if you have replacement insurance on your gear.
That way, if you hook your stuff up and it burns down the school, or you wreck anything of theirs, they can get reimbursed without having to sue you personally.
Same goes for any other venue.

holy another calgarian, we're all over this site. Liability insurance is a bitch, they would want full coverage, how much does a school cost?

pretty much you could cover your ass for 300,000.00 (liability) + 15,000.00 (personal injury) and pay about 100.00/yr.

the rest of the damage the insurance from the other people should pay as it would be smart to have coverage on their part... you know... for accidents that happen.

You are correct.... However that is not entirley accurate. The rate here in cali is about 1000 a year, and you have to put 500 down. I cant pay that right now... However I have renters insurance, but it only covers up to 1000 bucks when the equipment leaves the home. And obviously I cannot use this for general liabilty. So I miss out on a lot of gigs, because they do not want to accept a waiver signed by me. At the resort I work at, they need me to be insured for a million dollars.

cool!

We are pretty lucky here in Canada... we can join the CDJA (Canadian DJ Ass.) for $310, it comes with 2 million liability. Add another $100 for an AVLA hard drive music license (or $35 for media).
There is also a discount available for equipment insurance.

As for the US... they have the ADJA but I don't know how much it is, or what it comes with.
Oh...and the US does not have any music recording licenses. haha.

They wouldn't sign the contract unless it included liability insurance.

I think you can also buy liability insurance for specific events, not in general? though as a performing dj you would probably save money getting it in general

I would tell the school to suck on my left... then right nut... and at the same time to stroke my dick.

Are you sure they aren't talking about a license instead?

if you put in the contract that they are responsible for any illegal activities or damaged equipment then you dont need insurance. depending on where you r the insurance can be mad expensive. in some areas if a party is broken up the cops can take ur gear. if you put that disclaimer in the contract the customer has to pay you for the equipment that the cops took.

once again, school or any other venue could care less if your equipment is insured, they are looking for liability insurance in case you cause damage to THEIR building or equipment. NOT YOURS.

you should have equipment insurance in case it gets stolen, dropped, blown up real good...etc.
