Youtube figures, or the comments section are not representative of a real crowd at all. Try your recipe with this, 1.8 billion plays, 31 million subscribers + 6 million likes. And watch a real crowd run away.
The answer is, if crowd don't dance, crowd don't like it.

Just because people are dancing doesn't mean they like it. I've had girls come up after dancing for 15/20 minutes and say "can you put some RNB on, we don't like this music!" And, what a kick in the balls that feels like! When out i'll make the most of it and often dance to music i despise, in the aid of fun. However 1 or 2 tracks will tip me over the edge, making for a sharp exit, specifically Steps Tragedy. What a tragedy it was, especially how another song was actually mixing in when it was abruptly started!?!
I have seen the difference between the crowd dancing politely, and dancing out of their minds. Usually it's quiet at the beginning then it gets some momentum (if you know what you're doing). Also a difference when the aim is to play background music, aka not loud / in your face. And I lost count of girls being blunt or plain rude saying I don't like this kind of music can you play that instead. Some are just rude enough to treat you like their own personal juke box. Never felt like a kick in the balls since I'm the one who's being paid to get through the front door.
One of the problems with the internet is the words one uses are often took not as intended. I wasn't referring to the rude ones. As far as i'm concerned they can stick it. I'm on about when you've got a group of lasses loving it and you think you're rocking their world, then one of them comes up and says it, that's the kick in the balls! Which is waht I turned to my friend and said when it happened!
You would mistake me for one of those dancing completely out of my mind. I'm not on about dancing politely, that is something quite different. I have been stood at the bar early doors and seen girls come in, start to dance and sing only for a friend to say, "do you like this song" replied with a head shaking "no not really!" I remember it well as these kind of moments have a huge impact on me, when they happen, even when i'm not Dj'ing. People do dance to songs they don't really like and often don't mind doing so. The rest are too busy talking to their friends to care that much. Those that don't are either boring or like listening to music regardless.
There's a load of psychology to how even the crowd noise of people talking can add 'hype' to a room. That's why in those situations it can be important to ride the volume carefully. If you don't have that it can make it harder playing not so obvious music. It's not always the job of a DJ to make a room go completely acka, time and place. Sometimes that can do more damage than good.
I agree 100% with you. Sometimes you can stop on the positive figures: the number of views. But in fact if 5M like, if 3M don't like it shows that the song is not so popular. The same thing happens during political elections: the president has been elected among 5 candidates with 20% in first round against 15%, 10%, 9%, 6%, 3%. So he represents only 20% of voters which is approximately 50% of entire people. So finally he gained only 20% of 50% favors: 10% positive opinions.
It is the same on YT so the answer could be that YT is just a tendance that helps you to figure out your success.
And for Bieber's case, millions of people hate him so ��
A lot of people will listen simply because they hate it... It's quite a strange thing. or checking it out to see what the fuss is about.
I remember when I first started bar work and thought to myself, if i play a set of every song I've ever hated it would generate a really good night of crowd responses. Not that I do that but...
