Yup. I've said it 100 times before and I'll say it again. A group of old guys (think white hair) sit around a table in the corporate building of Clear Channel Radio and since they own 90% of the airwaves in the US, they get to decide what Dick & Jane get to listen to.

Thank god for internet radio. Because of the bullshit above I've been in the process of starting my own station.

When a child is born and raised around top 40 radio and MTV, they become that, usually. Most people have very little worthwhile going on for them--they like to sit in front of the boob tube, hardly read anything but trendy magazines (that the television told them to read), search for the same stupid shit on the Internet, and then talk to their friends about the same thing. They're given music that is easily identifiable, with a catchy hook and lots of LYRICS! Not deep lyrics, but lyrics that are simply enough for them to repeat a few times in a 3 minute track.

Same thing happened to jazz way, way back. It was THE huge pop/dance/mainstream music in the 20s, 30s, and 40s. Then it got a bit too creative and different for the standard audience, but fortunately the simple-minded, catchy sounds of early rock 'n roll took off from there. Then it happened again with disco, 80s synth pop, hair band rock, grunge, then hip-hop. Of course, all the while, manufactured factory pop, as I like to call it, has been big practically the whole time. You can't get away from the Partridge Families, Hansons, Meneudos, New Kids, Britneys, and NSyncs. It's impossible...people like the cheese no matter HOW BAD IT REALLY IS.

Really, it's all a way to keep the sheep docile and consume all the worthless shit you can possibly get them to consume. That's why all these companies have tie-ins with one another. Sony Music owns 50 Cent, they make a video game and a movie to tie in with their market blitz. They work a deal with Hershey to have a 50 Cent candy bar contest, and Hasbro to make 50 Cent toys, a clothing manufacturer to make and design G-Unit clothing--and of course all the guest TV and radio appearances/tie-ins. Then (referring to the pop star DJ post) they even get 50 Cent to do shit he can't do just to make the "awareness" go up. So they send him out to DJ, be a guest chef at Chile's, and fly his ass to Iraq to unveil the brand new oil refinery opened up by ExxonMobile.

Yeah, it's my fictional account, but this shit does happen.

It totally happens man, and I totally agree. The ironic thing is that the hot new mainstream thing is the whole indie fad. So the cool thing to do is be uncool. Anyone for head exploding logic?

Will Azada hit the nail on the head. You can close this post now.

EDIT: Well I see now the original question was not really answered. Most of the answers posted are for "How does MTV retain the attention of 10 million retards?"

But to answer the actual question of "Why is electronic music always used on TV but never on mtv or the radio?" ....

EDM gives the sense of fast paced emotion (usually) and futuristic feel. Car commercials, for example, will not only have someone telling you how cutting edge and safe their new car is, they'll make you FEEL it too with a spicy drum n bass track. Same thing with the Bacardi commercials playing garage. For the most part, EDM, whether you like it or not, provides "cool" points and can get your heart beating faster than any other music. That's what you want. You want the consumer to get excited when they think about your product.

Haha, you know. You're like the only one who actually answered the OP. By the time I read all the replies I was in "the system is holding us down" mode.

And I liked Amp. I remember seeing "House of God" by DHS on there and then still remembered to buy it on vinyl like 10 years after I had seen the video. That was my favorite MTV show when I was younger. Daft Punk, Aphex Twin, Future Sound of London, Underworld, Death in Vegas, Fatboy Slim, Jeff Mills, Prodigy, Atari Teenage Riot and like a million other cool videos. They were always so different from the standard MTV fare...EDM guys seemed to really dig claymation, too.

Maybe because the crowd that listens to kiddie pop, hoochie r&b, and ganster hip hop is the only market that still listens to the radio or watches MTV, and they're not very likely to be buying a new car or watching cartoons that require a thinking sense of humor.

Her old work is pop.
However, you must admit that her producer (Stuart Price) has made her latest album and few tracks geared more towards an edm sound. Someon said she's pop, but that's what she was, now she's changing her style.

Here in the US MTV has played ZERO electronica videos so far this year. ( except for The Gorillaz ) I'm 99% sure of this. I have only watched MTV/MTV2 two times this year though. Also this is the first time i have ever heard of MTV Dance. They don't have that channel in the US. I think if electronic music had more lyrics they would play it more. All the stuff that gets anykind of air play in the US has human lyrics. (not donkey) *lol*

I have MTV2 and they don't play any EDM music vids or anything like that. They do, however, play EDM within the shows. Especially Daft Punk.

It's used on TV as background music. To MOST people it isn't catchy or really that interesting, so they can focus their attention on what's on the screen. I don't watch TV but in the rare case that I do and I hear EDM in a commercial or something, I immediately lose focus on what's being shown/advertised. If they used catchy popular music in commercials, people would most likely pay more attention to the song rather than what's being shown.
