I think it would work in a pinch, but i would use dmx or at least mic cable. if life ever goes for you like it does for me, the one time you really really need it to work. is when there will be the one time it does not work properly
some times going cheap costs you more in the long run.

I forgot I had a huge stash of XLR mic cables from back in the day when I did karaoke. I'm in the process of resoldering these with the Cat5 I have. I just don't have one that's 50' long - about 40' is the longest of them, but most are between 15 and 30 feet. So basically, I'll have quite a few extras in the gig bag, just in case.
I'm with you on the strange stranded stuff. I don't know how I got this stuff, but it's probably why I've been able to coil it so many times without failure. I used to do traveling training for work, where I'd hardwire a bunch of computers up to a router/switch. Wireless was a big no-no in the offices I worked out of. These cables have been in storage for over 4 years... so might as well repurpose them!
