The Official Periodic Table of the Hip Hop Elements

Full JPG VIEW => http://officialperiodic.com/uploads/...otected1mb.jpg

The idea came about during a semester of staring at the Periodic Table of Elements trying to get the numbers and letters to sink into my brain for the final exams. You all know the original primary four Elements… Earth, Wind, Fire, Air, well just as those elements needed updating so did Hip Hop’s primary four.

Just like the Periodic Table of Elements, this table is based on the basic elements at the top, and later 'elements' in succession. And just like the Periodic Table of the Elements, it's organized by rows and vertical columns as you'll see examining it. Also like the Elements table, some of the abbreviations don't appear to be shorted versions for the name of elements themselves. For example the element Gold is "Au" (because it is Latin for aurum), likewise the element Block Party "He" is short for Herc.

So basically what started out as a trick for memorizing Chemistry 101 turned into countless wasted employer hours of non-work related distractions for me and my bud Uptownkid. What you see before you took literally months and months of us scrutinizing the validity of each element so to help us, we came up with the following basic rules…

- Elements are things not people (that's why there is no Herc element)

- Elements (at some point in time) must have been associated with the Hip Hop culture (obviously)

- Elements must be agreed upon by a majority of heads as genuinely Hip Hop. (For example we thought about "Sprite" because of the Hip Hop commercials years ago being in the Name Brand column, but decided it was basically a mere side note compared to brand names that did make it)

- Elements should be arranged in chronological order (if possible) by row and in categories by columns (again if possible). This was difficult, but our current configuration is about as close as we can come to following that general rule.

This is version 1.1 of the table
, as we understand that heads and haters will collectively provide feedback for changes, additions and improvements. Feel free to comment on what changes you would like to see or what elements are missing. We realize that in order for it to be validated it must be fairly universally accepted and likewise in order to be a viable product in the future it has to evolve with the times. The final row will therefore remain open for future elements yet to be determined.

Uptownkid and I have Copyright Protected (Sept 2008) our table to protect it from getting bitten, jacked, changed, sold, etc, so the rights belong to us. Within the next 2 weeks we will be selling T-shirts and posters through Ebay and various other online retailers yet to be determined but that will be announced later. (I will put the actual spam in the proper forum, once it is spam, at this point it's a discussion about it's validity)

Before making this public, weeks ago, we put this through further quality control by submitting this to MC Eyegetzraw, DJ Ready Red, and MC Neb Dirty all who have contributed either with new elements or cosigned off on it that it is good.

So here is version 1.1, please give us honest feedback about this document. Both positive and negative feedback is expected, we ain’t made of glass, but try not to be Element Ht.

I think it's a pretty clever idea, and covers pretty much everything I would associate with hiphop. I don't know about a T-shirt of it though, unless it was designed well. That image on the front of a shirt would be tough to see unless it is set up right.

EDIT: I see one for dope, is that supposed to be like 'that sounds dope' or dope like drugs? I see one for blunts and one for dealer, but none for drugs. There's no doubt that drugs a prevalent in hiphop today from crack (Flavor Flav and ODB) to promethazine cough syrup (anything from the south) to ecstacy (anything from SF bay). Just an idea.

Yeah coke was big in the old school too. White lines, etc. I have tapes of cold crush and busy bee and furious five and they have all sorts of "say blow" shit goin on. Also Ghostface and Rae and Camron and Clipse and coke rap etc...

In general it is too dj centric. Pro tools? Serato Scratch? Final Scratch? Who is your audience? What about Demo and A&R? HH Forums? Its gotta come harder. The idea is stupid enough that you could have a dorm room market but you gotta find some better elements. I think you should open it up to people or vital albums. Just my opinion, and you asked for it. Call me a hater but I think it is a great concept with mediocre execution. The elements themselves are a bit lame.

Some I dont see: OE, Adidas, Fast Rap, Bronx, Beat Street, 808s, Breaks, linoleum, gold chains, subway cars, human beatbox... I could go on but that is your job!

If you could find ways to incorporate iconic lyrics and so forth...

I think you are missing the mark.

EDIT: I see breaks.

Good comments and great question, man. Dope is generic enough to be associated with any illegal substance, be it grass, coke, crack... And it has the double meaning slang connotation so that's why we chose it.

JoonShk - "that's a pretty solid table. I like it."

Thanks man.

Hamza21 "a dumb idea and a total waste of time."

You sound like my Human Resources representative did and frankly you sound like someone who longs to play footsie with 'Toby' from "The Office" on a non work related picnic. Don't make me bring the ants.

djhousecat and Brawny... I really appreciate your comments. I have Haters already if you zoom in on the larger version you'll see it. Heads is to Haters as Protons is to neutrons. Adidas is there, so is subway cars, so is Tr 808, so is beatbox, so is the newer elements like final scratch, serato. You'll have to zoom in a bit to see it. Bling encompasses Gold Chain, as Gold Chain is early Bling, which is there.

Thanks you guys for your good ideas!

first let me say that although this may not be something that I would necessarily buy, i do think there's a huge market out there for something like this- especially on t-shirts and dorm posters like Brawny said. i sort of disagree with symptoms on the drug thing though. blunts is pretty much enough in terms of the drug references. maybe an Sw (selling weight) or something just to address the huge drug dealer influence in hip hop, but you sort of covered that already with "dealer". the only element glaringly absent in my mind is Bronx.

other than that, i wish you the best dude- hopefully you can make a couple bucks off this.

also, since when is flava flav an actual crackhead? just thought he was kind of a naturally ridiculous guy...
