tips on drums?

I can never seem to get drums to sound as "tight" or "crisp" as I want them to be - I don't know if its the samples I'm using, or if its the techniques...

can someone point my in the right direction of tying to improve this? should I get new samples? where should i look for a nice array of House-oriented drum samples?

Also, I'm looking for some tribal/middle eastern percussin samples... anyone know a good bank or VST for this?

try compressing them, with about a 1:10 ratio, 15ms attack, and a slower release

Try using a different Drum Vst. Many Decent Drum/Percussion based VST's offer excellent Drums.

Try NI's Battery.

It can be either your samples or your technique OR both. Giving compression settings isn't going to be very helpful as we all know drums can sound different and specific settings are only gonna sound good on certain drum sounds.

Good sample selection is key. Learning good techniques which you understand and are able to apply to different sounds is also key. Filtering, compression, reverb, distortion etc.

What kind of drum sound are you trying to achieve? Post up examples init.

I think any drum machine will do basically the same thing. The samples and how you use them are what matters.

trance.nu has a decent tutorial on how to build a good kick out of a couple easy-to-find samples and tools...but that only works if you like Airwave's kicks.

I use ReDrum and iDrum with Battery's sample library atm for everything but kicks, I have a synthesized kick that I really like that I send through a compressor. They work okay. microtonic is a good drum synth imo.
