My Microphone Sound Quality...

Yo whatsup DJF crew...?

Me and some other guy on a different thread got into a little bit of a debate about microphone sound quality and I'm begining to agree with him that my beloved Audio Technica Mic is insufficiant... And now I want to upgrade to a higher quality Microphone...

http://myspace.com/amanualchrist

Checkout a song I just recorded called Father, Father, Father. (Ft.Kalika) All of the VOX were recorded on a Audio Technica AT2020... Also... it seems to have lost a significant amount of quality being posted onto the MYSPACE PLAYER...

I compared the Mp3 on Itunes to the Mp3 on Myspace and their is a big difference...

So... Maybe you guys can tell... I mainly want to record some sample tracks for MYSPACE For now... and maybe ill rent like a $1000 MIC for a week and record the entire album... Or better yet... get into a studio...

My Audio Technica is perfect for podcasting Spoken Word Poetry and my Essays and stuff... So I'll keep it for now... And i'm not sure I want to invest an entire forutune on a new MIC right now... budget is too tight,..

But what do you think about the sound quality of the Hiphop Track?

nooo I'm using my Podcasting Microphone...

I dont know what kinda MIC i'm gonna end up getting... but I'm compromising with patients and waiting till I produce all my music... Then ill probably hit up a professional studio...

My set up is for DJing, Podcasting and producing... As for recording hiphop or music vox I sapose i can just get a demo for Myspace...

What kinda MIC should i get in the future?

I'm using an Audio Technica AT2020.

for recording vocals that you want to sound professional, you should should no less that a $300 condenser mic.

then run that into a quality microphone pre amp and compressor BEFORE the computer

I rerecorded my VOX... this time its not clipping...

I think ill just be fine for recording podcasts and demos for myspace or W/E

When I'm done producing my Album... what i'll do is go to a professional studio and get it recorded and mastered...

I dont know much about mastering... i just tweak around with things..

Is this the mic you have?

If it is, I don't see why you shouldn't get pretty decent results, since it's a pretty good mic. I suggest you read some books or check some online resources for tips on recording techniques. There's no mic that will automatically give you "the perfect sound". Experiment a little with mic positions, different wind screens etc. Your room will have a great impact on your sound, so move the mic around and see where you get the sound you like the best.

Check for example this website for a start:

Yeah... I asked around before i baught the MIC...

Thats the one... I had about a $400 ish budget... my friend who runs the music production program at Centenial college in Toronto said for a low budge home studio it would be really decent and compared to some of the more expensive ones...

I was talking to Skeylab the moderator... and he tells me that my external sound driver the T.C.Electronics Konneckt 8 is what I should upgrade...

He said having an onboard compressor *(dont quote me) and compressing the signal before it goes into your computer will make a huge diff..

I also kinda suck at mastering and EQing things obviously...

I think my MIC and Preamp Soundcard are perfect for the Podcasting i want to do... I do alot of spoken word Poetry.., Also... its good enough for recording a MYSPACE demo... or whateva...

I'll have to pay to go into a studio and professionally record and get everything mastered...

Also.. I produce all my own beats and have been told all my levels are off... I dont have expensive monitors and use $40 sony headphones for now... So i'm a little deaf... I'll soon upgrade to expensive headphones or somthing...

What you're doing. To me it sounds kinda dry....maybe a slight touch on the reverb would work out great at the beginning....and also consider doubling up the vocals to give them more depth at certain points for emphasis on words and so forth - you know, like rappers usually do.

I think you should definitely double up the "Father Father Father' vocalists.

IMO

Good job though.

Just some productive criticism.

I agree... I dont think its your mic. I would suggest getting someone to do your e.q. for you. Reverb would help alot... your track is much lower than your vocal so you probably need to bring that in more from the background.

Felt like you were def. lacking depth. Maybe lowering your pitch a bit when you are speaking the lyrics.

The backup singer needs some work too... i think the depth thing again...

Your recording environment sounds empty... kinda like the vocals were running away??? Try the track in a closet. <--- no joke

That should help with the depth problem as well.

I've heard many artists and some VERY NICE recordings that were actually recorded in a closet. A real studio is not always necessary but nice if you can get your hands on one.

It has 0 reverb on it... I could go into cubase and add some.. that probably would help thanks...

Do you mean DOUBLE up as in copy and paste the female vocals over top eachother and give a tiny hair space apart? so its a bit echoey and sounds like she sang it twice?

Would it be cheesy to use my own VOX as backup vocals? and backup my own punch words?

Well you could do that but from my experience in the studio (not with rap though) is that copying and pasting the vocals and giving them X milliseconds apart makes it sounds like its in a tube alot of times.

Just have your vocalists sing twice over the recording as you record the voice, then you can adjust the volume of the 2nd vocals to be "behind" the first vocals she sang before.

As far as punches with your spttin' you can try the same thing by putting the 2ndary vocals sorta "behind" the primary vocals.
