Wedding/Older crowd style of mixing: Need opinions

Hey guys so I just did my first mobile set last night (40th b day), it's the first of a few for this summer and I was just wanted some opinion on this.

I came from bedroom DJing and doing clubs so i'm use to beat matching and making tracks flow nicely between one another. Obviously this isn't the case with a wedding/older crowd. I found myself just dropping the new track on the one or doing a fade between tracks.

For events like this is beat matching even relevant? Obviously it is when you get a dance floor going and your spinning chart music but for early on is it better to just maintain a consistent feel even if the BPM's don't match.

For example early on I was just playing through classic motown stuff and laid back funk tracks and I would just drop it on the one.

    What do you guys think?

I try to beat mix even with oldies.

Examples of some fun sets with oldies:

"This Is How We Do It" (+3 bpm)
    "Yeah!" (Usher)
    "Let's Get Married(Remix)" (+4.5 bpm)

"Please Don't Stop The Music" (Rihanna)
"Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" (MJ) [+3 bpm]

"Pour Some Sugar on Me" (+8 bpm)
"I Love Rock N' Roll" (Jett)
"Back In Black" (AC/DC) (+3 bpm)

"Safety Dance" (Men Without Hats) (+4.5 bpm)
    "I Need You Tonight" (INXS)
"Hot In Herre" (Nelly) -OR- "I Can't Wait" (Nu Shooz) (+4 bpm)

These are just a few examples of oldies that can be mixed together.

BPM +/- is approximate, using Denon DND-9000 with key control.

Agree. Not to mention...when did 40 become people who listen to "oldies"??

I beatmix all night at weddings and you can do lots and lots of creative stuff.

Last night I beatmixed from On the Floor by J-Lo, to Are You Gonna Go My Way by Lenny Kravitz, to You Shook Me All Night Long by AC/DC, to We Found Love by David Guetta and everyone from 70 year olds to 20 year olds were dancing.

Saying you cant mix at weddings is an excuse that untalented mobile DJs have been using for years. Totally untrue.

I beat match at weddings all night too. Last night I had a wedding that was 80% country......even beat matched that, some stuff was harder than others. I always at least try to do a 3-4 song string at a time then change tempos if needed.

Old people DO notice beat matching and good mixing, I had 70 & 80 y.o.'s complimenting me on it

NEVER UNDER ESTIMATE electronic music. When we played at Lovefest (Love parade) in San Francisco. We played tech house, house and techno - This old couple followed us our float through the entire parade. They loved it.

I believe that you should ALWAYS beat match in general. There are other ways to mix a track but there is a fine line between mixing music together and just playing tracks stand alone.
