Dave is on to something here...

From what I recall, the TTX does BPM detection and key-locking, which suggests that all audio is routed through some sort of DSP. A standard fully-analog turntable (like the SL-1200) will still pass phono signal if the platter is rotated with the power off, so if you don't get audio from standard vinyl with the TTX turned off, that confirms the presence of digital components in the signal path.

The signal is totally absent now.

My other (working) TTX passes audio in phono with the power off, but the dead one is not producing any signal now.

Don't know much about TT's but here's what I think... The motor is faulty and when it is called on to produce more torque it is heating up which in turn is heating up a PCB or electronic component with low heat tolerance. If you open it up look for dark brown coloration or other signs of heat damage. Look at the windings if visible.

How long is the warranty on a TTX? He just bought it in 2010. If it's still under warranty, you'll want to avoid opening it up. As that will probably void the warranty.

Did you ever figure anything out with this? I can't find anything except for problems regarding the motor and/or platter sensor.
