Just got outted from my Residency ouch

Started this residency about 8 weeks ago.

First I went there for a 'try-out' on a thursday night for an hour. ~No pay. Was told by the night manager that I start that Saturday, staff really liked my style.

Go there that saturday to find out, by the general manager, that they had someone for the next two weeks. No pay.

Two weeks go by, I get a call asking to start on Fridays. I do two fridays with the night manager, become pretty good friends with the entire staff, nights go very well.

Asked to swap with their sat. night guy so he can do weddings, for two weeks. I accept and work both nights with the general manager.

First Saturday, rock out, probably best night there and packed wall to wall.

Next Saturday, I find out some moron shot a gun off that friday night, and was given instructions to play "no hip-hop, rap or techno-stuff" then later nothing with "Hispanic lyrics (referring to Pitbull in a particular song)." This night sucked, everyone was on high-alert, with little dance floor going. Eventually I ask her if I can do a more "upbeat wedding style" which she excepts and I pack the floor midnight to close. Before that I was playing a disco, 80s and classic rock mix which had good results with older crowd but not overall in the place.

Memorial Day weekend, tiny, whiny crowd asking for mostly hard-core rap/hip-hop. I eventually break down and get a floor going, but the entire night was about 1/5 of what it normally is.

TODAY I get a facebook message from the night manager saying that the general manager said she booked a new guy for the next two fridays. Basically it comes down to having the night manager do the dirty work and tell me I am off.

I made good relationships with everyone but the general manager. Their saturday night guy, works for a mobile company and I would guess that they have another guy from that particular company coming in.
I am bummed because it was such a nice staff and a great venue, but the pay was below average in the area and a bit of a drive. I guess if I end up gigging there again I am going to up my rates, which will probably say no too.

Thought I'd put this out there, just another reason not to put a lot of trust into a constantly moving industry.

You didn't have a residency to get "outted" from. You were booked week to week.

Hey the only thing I would advise is to go on and apply to work at other places. Obviously this place is ran by managers and owners who have NO clue what they are doing. They have the wrong crowd to begin with and they are now paying the price and also making you pay the price... By what you are saying you could tell exactly what kind of crowd it was... I bet its one of these clubs without a dresscode, full of slubs/gangsters (hence why the hiphop/rap requests all night). These are the people who drive the quality of a club down and make the shootings happen. Why would you want to work at this club now? There was a shooting... there goes 75% of your good non-violent crowd... this is a failing club/bar now unless they redeem themselves by enforcing who gets in through their doors. How will females feel secure now to go into this establishment? You got it easy... get out of there and work for a place which cares about the security of their patrons and not only the patrons, but your own safety.

They did you a favor... its not always about the money.

Sorry to hear that. Sounds like it may have been for the better though

    LOL me too.

In all honestly I really enjoyed playing there, it was typically a good crowd, I never once felt threatened or uncomfortable.
Reason I wanted this place is within a year I am looking at moving to that city, I can also work from anywhere in my current job, so I was going to be living there during the weekends anyways. This is just a set-back, I can live without it but I am a bit taken back because how well it was going.
