    Promotion Vs. Spam

I find myself very seldom when promoting myself in the music biz... but at the same time, other people post their new mix 20 times a day or more...

What's the line between promoting, and just annoying spam for you guys?
Need a new Global Trance avatar, takers? :p

    once a week, pushing it.

    once a day, spam.

If you post the same thing on multiple pages and networks and I happen to run into them, spam.

Its tough. Sometimes you just need to let your following grow organically which takes time...

Exactly. Pushing your mix/tracks/events/ to the same group of people daily is spamming it. It makes you look desperate. Ideally you'd want to just mention it a few times and let word of mouth and fans do the rest.

Is there any way to block ALL event invites?

Really....Ego much? Believe it or not, there are people that only have a Facebook or only have a twitter and I know multiple people who refuse to get Facebook or Twitter accounts. So you have to post in all of those locations and then some to cast the widest net. Sure some people will get it multiple times and that's part of the game being on multiple networks.

I consider it spam when I get the same information multiple times in the same account/network. Now if you are putting out new and relivent content then that's different...

inviting people to events from the other side of the world/country is fucking annoying, people should spend some time separating their friends into "friends" and "people i added for djing/promotional reasons/fans"

you wont piss off your real friends that way when you go and invite everyone.

I don't have a seperate FB account for DJing. I never, ever add people for the purpose of my music. Anyone that is a friend on Facebook is either someone that I know personally or has added me due to my music (or being in the same "scene").

What I hate is when someone writes a little "advert" where they'll say something like "DJ Shitforbrains is the hottest DJ in Walsall. His highly anticipated new mix, 'Bananarama's Greatest Shits' is out now, blah, blah" and then they just spam it across loads of forums, most of which they never even contribute to. Coming across like a person rather than a spambot makes a big difference to me personally.

On the forum I co-run I have a spam policy that's different to the one here. I allow spam in certain sections if it's on-topic, so if it's someone promoting a hip-hop gig that members of the site are likely to be interested in, for instance, then I won't delete it. But, the fact that people post and run does annoy members on forums. I won't name names, but there's members on here that promote their own stuff quite a bit, but they also contribute to discussions and they come across like people who are just passionate to get their stuff out there, rather than automated bots doing the equivalent of slapping up unwanted posters on the DJF walls, and that's the difference between good and bad promotion to me.

I have no problem with people sending out stuff on social networks and my email address has obviously been picked up by some promo companies as I get sent tracks and stuff (99% of which I delete after one listen, lol), but again, I prefer it if it sounds like it's come from a passionate person and not some "cliché advert-o-matic" machine.

I get tired seeing the same mixes constantly re-posted on facebook, twitter, ect, but I'm tolerant of the flyers, as I'm a bit guilty of spreading them out myself. I figure it's easy to find my mixes, so I'll post fresh ones on a few sites and leave the others for people to browse themselves.

I think if you promote yourself too much, people's eyes will glaze over eventually...there's a difference between sharing and overbearing!

I did have a separate DJ account for the DJ biz and one for me. I finally got to the point where I got tired of having to update both with different apps, etc.

So now that I can access FB status privacy controls on my iphone, I am deleting the DJ profile, and making anyone who is involved with me just for DJ'ing/Business relations as an acquaintance - and everyone of my personal people as friends. So if i dont want a status to go out to the acquaintances then i just choose that when i update.

Of course my issue is more of the Business relations not seeing me cuss out various politicians (for instance) - because i dont want politics to affect the business
