Personally, I say do not worry about what is popular and what people play at parties because to me that takes away some of the fun. I say listen to some house and dub step and just play what you like. If you play what you like and you're good at what you do people will notice and enjoy not only you the dj but the music and that would intern turn into a pretty good party [:
Drop a dubstep tune in at the wrong time and it can literally clear a dancefloor instantly. I tend to play some bouncy dubstep (fullham to waterloo), then a bit of 2 step, then drop to some bad man bass driven tune (v.i.v.e.k. - soundman). Wash rinse repeat. Dubstep to me can get quite boring after a while, so i like to keep changing the mood and keep the people on their toes as to whats coming next. Plus it would be too easy to mix an hour of dubstep stuff that all sounds similar.
so i know this hedges on cross pollination, forum-wise, but for OPs sake,

im just getting into mixing, and dubstep is my genre of choice. all of my mixes are 140, so it might give you a decent idea of what it COULD sound like, if you wanted it to
