Take your cues from the guests... if they are sitting at tables with no food, get them dancing. If food is served, just slow it back down and tell them dinner is being served. Your job is to make sure they don't get bored. There comes a point in the night that if you haven't started them dancing, they never will... they will just leave early. Get them out there early.

I charged $600 for my first wedding too. It's too low. Charge more.

Day time weddings almost always bomb a little... as do dry weddings, and Sunday weddings.
This is enlightening. I always thought the special dances were supposed to kick it off.

During dinner is also a great time to get kids involved. If the bride and groom are okay with it, it makes for a great time and makes you look very active in their reception. A DJ that can handle the kids so the grown folks can talk is never a bad thing.

    Oh yeah! Definitely.

Give me enough gaff tape, and I can take care of all of the kids.

Yes... but who said the special dances had to be after dinner? or dessert?

I usually knock them out between salads and main course.

Can't tell if that was sarcastic or real.

I think that's a great idea if it works with the hall. I'll have to pay more attention to see where I can make that work. A lot of places around here are pretty set in their ways and don't want to change.
