Are you talking about n00bs that got into DJing via DVS or are you referring to the cats that have played vinyl for decades (some of whom moved to a DVS system)?

Typically, I've found everything in your post to be the exact opposite.
In fact, I find that those that buy controllers tend to be the ones all about DJ Super-stardom... looking for the cheap way into the next big thing.

In general, I am talking about younger guys on DVS (not vinyl) that picked DVS *over* controllers simply because they want the "look"
But by no means does that exclude older guys, I know a handful of them that feel that they were/are the best thing going because they use old technology to DJ with.
Just for reference, I am by far the youngest guy in my group of DJ friends and one of the only ones who use a controller (outside of NS7, V7, 3900s).
It's not ego if you have the skills to back it up, but having said that, all the best djs I know are really down to earth people.

The ego can be influenced by the type of equipment the DJ is using, but it comes down to their personality and mind state of said DJ. If you're cocky and think your shit doesn't stink, that's because you're an asshole. I think the use of a controller, turntables, CD players or whatever else plays a lesser role in their ego (this isn't always the case though).
That being said, I don't really have any specific stories to share of egotistical DJs.

i love it when a DJ talks down to me when im running sound(because they think im just a good for nothing soundguy and theyre ON STAGE being really COOL). the noob ass DJ goes on about all his gigs and fake accolades and how often they play out("yea man me and my boys throw huge parties all the time!"(thats code for once a month for 100 people) and how hard they kill it.
i dont even mention im the resident at all these places they just bad mouthed because they were jealous and ive played more gigs in the last 10 days than theyve played in a year AND im the fucking sound guy(if you piss the sound guy off, for some reason the subs wont work or the monitors will be WAY to loud).
used to grind my gears, but then i remembered im a professional that pays more in taxes than they made throwing parties in total for the year.
egotistical n00bs dont even need to be dealt with, they destroy their own career without any help.
remember boys and girls: you are a professional, treat DJing as such and you will be rewarded. Another thing, is to befriend the head bartender(smoke/snort with them to bond im serious as cancer i know it goes against professionalism) and find out what your sales are and what the other employees think of you. negotiate with that info, without revealing how you get that info.
once you can ask for more money than is fair market pay and you have a reputation to protect, you are not a noob.

TBH, I don't see a difference. An egotistical asshole is an egotistical asshole regardless of what equipment he buys.
I honestly question who these guys are... not that they don't exist but more about the fact it seems that it was never about the music for them... and, IMO, that is a rare breed as technics and a vinyl habit were not cheap. Don't mistake pride for egotism - the guys that have played for 20 years dedicated their lives to something which most of them are not getting paid the insanely lucrative amounts that pop DJs do. Look at Derrick Carter... guy has been making solid house music since the early 90s, does enough to have a decent lifestyle but he's not pulling down Deadmau5 money at all. He does it for the music... and to come even close to suggesting those of his ilk are egotistical like all these fucktards with controllers that think they're going to be the next big thing in EDM is just retarded.
See one of the recent True Life's on MTV - a 20-year-old kid in Pomona, CA that produced 1x top 100 electro house track thinks he has a life made based on that one production.

That really doesn't happen with guys that had actual hardware when they were first producing tracks at a time before EDM was so popular.

DJs that started out with just controllers and that is all they ever knew strike me more as the type to be about the attention and feeding off the popularity of fads like electro house and dubstep.
Obviously, not a black and white rule but I see a lot more posers with controllers than I've ever seen with $2k worth of standalone equipment.
