tiesto does have a big ego, i think most people would find it hard not to standing infront of 10,000 people who paid to see us and if they were voted world #1 numerous times and paid millions to dj.
but the pictures of him to illustrate it, i dont think is fair. he's in an arena playing to 1000's of people, its part of putting on a show, if he stood there looking all humble and still people would moan that he's boring. if he walked around acting like that outside the club that would be different,
Norman cook showboats on stage as much as anyone, but he's one of the most humble people in the industry whilst being one of the most successful.
in regards to n00bs having an ego, ive seen it a lot over the years, more so as a promoter than a dj, big confidence, big talk can get you quite far quite fast if you know who to do it to, ive seen some really mediocre dj's playing some pretty decent venue's, but the faster you climb, the faster you fall. those who talk the talk and act the big shot usually piss off the people they initially tried to impress pretty fast, its rare ive seen them last long.
In my old residency a guy started doing bar work and got his leg into DJ'n one night when the DJ didn't turn up, a few months later he turned into a cocky DJ saying that i was going to be getting fired due to the crowd not enjoying my music (my residency of 3 years). This guy had been a childhood friend of mines.
Fast forward 2 years and now this guys ego is huge. My new residency (of 2 years) is the biggest club in the area and the head DJ has a really high standard to who plays there (guests). But we hold a DJ competition every year to let new guys try out and seek out potential talent to work with (bringing younger guys on).
Now this 'mate of mine' was telling me for about 6 months that he was going to win it and his confidence was amazing! I wish i had some of it! Anyways, the night comes and yeah the guy won the competition, he played a good decent set compared to the others but he didn't back up his ego/confidence.
After the competition i took the guy to the side and basically told him everything that pissed me off with his attitude because he asked for feedback and opinions. Since then the guys personally has totally turned and now he is willing to learn and really, really polite. It makes you want to work with him and bring the guy on a bit.

good that he's willing to learn. sometimes it takes that someone to put you straight.
its a fine balance between ego and confidence, you need a little of the 1st and a lot of the 2nd to do well in this industry, but you gotta get the mix right.
The industry is full of ego, especially here in London with all the hipster DJs and their macbook/controller set up that play music that puts me to sleep.
To be fair though I have met a lot of down to earth nice guys and the guys I have a residency with at the moment are a wicked bunch of Spanish guys who are running a successful night who are in it for the music and for the fun. That is how it should be.

Definitely! If the guy i'm speaking about is willing to learn he could be a potentially great DJ. But your right about the balance. Me personally still lack in confidence in some of my sets which is holding me back at the moment.
That's the kind of things i enjoy going to watch and support. I ran a club night with a few mates for a year, and we broke even, hardly took in much crowds (about 50-100 people in a venue for 300) but the people that was there was there because of the music. Not to get smashed or for the look. Probably my best year of gigging to date!

Typically I find the snubby-nose people with DVS and turntables have *by far* the largest egos, in terms of people I have actually met and worked with. Typically these are the guys that put me to sleep, with just back and forth mixing, and I swear to god they would use a controller, except for the fact they want the turntable look, so they can boost their ego and say "look I am a real DJ" and much more interested in having as many girls as possible talk to them throughout the night.
