i think the clown aspect is an extension of the whole DJ worship thing. if people weren't staring at the DJ instead of dancing and interacting with one another, none of the pageantry would be noticed, or necessary.

i've noticed ever since i started spinning that a lot of our local shows are packed with all of the other local dj's standing around, watching someone dj. then those same guys repost this article on FB complaining about clowns in the scene, when they actually helped create the situation that allows those clowns to thrive. derp!!

This song lyric sums everything up. In this business, you are either an entertainer or you are an observer/fan. All of this talk about keeping it real cracks me up.

I'm sorry, when people are paying $25 - 60 to see someone perform their craft (whatever it is), they want to see a show. They want to see the person they just forked over more than likely a days worth of work (after you pay for parking and have a few drinks) actually do something. They want a show. They don't want to spend that kind of money for the person they spent all that money to see tucked away where nobody can see. This is the exact reason why someone like Britney Spears and Frank Sinatra who are/were marginally talented becomes a Superstar and the very talented people who finish in the top places on a show like idol are barely remembered 2 years later. Britney and Frank put on a show and entertained the crowd. You can be the dopest lyricist, most gifted singer or the most knowledgeable and technical DJ on the planet, but if you are not entertaining, then it doesn't matter.

On top of that, with the advents of DJ technology, DJing is now accessible to the masses which means you have to find a way to differentiate yourself from everybody else. That often takes the shape of gimmicks....but guess what, gimmicks work. It worked when Ozzie bit the head off of a bat and it works when DJ Bl3nd puts that stupid mask on and has what looks like a seizure...and guess what, they will still work 20 years from now. That's why people still use them, it gets peoples attention. Now, you have to have substance and a good product after you have gotten peoples attention or else they won't stick around. Perfect example is Dennis Rodman...excellent at getting peoples attention with gimmicks, but didn't have the substance to keep peoples attention and look where he is now.

So go ahead and bitch and complain about clowns all you want...but guess what its the clowns that people come to the show to see, not the trapeze artist or the tight rope walker...they want to see 20 clowns climb out of a VW Beatle. Seriously...when you think about a circus, the order of thoughts that come to mind are animals, clowns and then everything else. Everything else is the substance, but the clowns are the draw. So feel free to be the substance of the show, but don't get upset when everyone remembers Bozo and not you. You can be Ludacris or you can be Nas.
Anyone can be a no talent hack and be a flash in the pan entertainer (where's Britney now?), it takes talent to be the substance, which may not ascend quickly, but lasts much longer.

What cracks me up is that she can't compose, and she can't sing.

...which is why the DJs I tend to enjoy prefer to be on the crowd's level instead of a stage...

A recording artist making $15,000,000 US per season judging other potential up and coming singers on X-Factor that has 2 Diamond and 4 Multi-Platinum Albums in the US market.

Sounds like she fell the hell off to me

^^^ out of the limelight, she can't handle herself. She's a nutcase, no amount of money or fame can correct that. And the X factor, please give me a break. The discussion has come down how many shiny records you have hanging on a frame and how much you get paid for what has to be one of the worst music programs on TV. She's a brand, like adidas or coca cola. Because it sells does not mean it's quality. The muppets buying her gig tickets have no sense of what quality music is, or what a real talented person should do on stage. Because if they knew in the first place, they'd be buying gig tickets to see a genuine singer. Which she's not. Mc Donalds food is shit, not food. Some still crave it.

She's a hack, and borderline cuckoo's nest customer. Any gold fish can open and close it's mouth on stage, so if you want to talk artists, please pick a real one. A bit like if I'm going to debate about DJing, I'm not going to quote Peter Hook.

Borderline cukoo yes...but to say that anybody can do what she does on stage is just plain wrong. 100s of thousands of people try everyday and only a very small handfull ever play a show bigger than a club with a few hundred people. So no!!! You can't just slap anybody on stage and say they can be a great performer...

Ask Vince McMahon how that worked out with the Ultimate Warrior...

Ask 90% of the people that have been on American Idol...

We are not talking out of the limelite, we are talking about on stage. I never said she was a great singer...I said she was marginally talented which I genuinely think she is. What I said was that she is a great entertainer. She knows how to get a crowds attention, and then keep their attention by entertaining them. And when it comes to that, she is one of the best...singing for her is second...maybe even third.

DJs are entertainers first and fore most. People pay us (hopefully) to entertain other people. The format we use to do that has traditionally been by playing other peoples music. But times are changing and we have to change with them. Anybody can play other peoples music, its up to us to make other peoples music something more...something special, something memorable...how that is done is totally up to the individual.
