Point Source and Column Array

I currently run 2, Bose L1Pro16s and those have been great for 100-150 people at weddings and small events. I was recently asked to DJ a prom in a large room with 300-350 people. I know the Bose will not fill that space and provide the level of volume and reach needed to keep 300+ people dancing so I was planning to pick up some additional speakers. I am curious if anyone has experience combining point source with column array speakers and if so, what was the end result? I am thinking if I spread out the column array from the point source, it might not sound terrible, but I have no way to test that theory...

Generally speaking you never want to mix different speakers. Sometimes you might get lucky and it will work, but more often than not it won't. Add a couple more of what you have.

Rent or hire in an appropriate point source speaker system for the prom, it will get quite a bit louder than the L1's so there is no point trying to use both speaker types in the same room... you won't even be able to hear the L1s.

Thanks! I will take your advice and see about renting something. Any suggestions on a system that would be sufficient for 300-400 people in a gym? I assume a minimum of 2 mains and 2 subs? Or would I do better to get 4?

4 18" subs and 4 tops would do it, and if possible get the tops up high and angle them down. Will there be any lighting deployed for the event? If you have truss going up that is a great place to hang speakers.
