    What keys really go together?

    Hi

I often use the Camelot Wheel for mixing songs in key.

However, sometimes keys that should go together, don't sound good when mixed

Other times, songs sound good together even though they have keys that shouldn't fit

There are different explanations and guidelines out there on how to use the Camelot Wheel. But how does it actually work? Is there one set of rules that always apply or does the tool only give an indication that two tracks should go together?

    Kind regards, Matteo Kopriva

There is more to mixing in key, than just using songs that are supposed to be key compatible. You have to phrase match, and know where exactly to mix them.

    Truth!

Learn your tracks, learn the breaks, the drums, the keys if necessary - but most of all use your ears to find sets of tracks that work together to express a musical journey. Mixing like a robot gets boring very quickly. Some tracks defintely don't work together so be careful. But generally no-one will come up to you to criticise a bad key, but they will come up to you to tell you that you mixed a musically interesting set.
bored, curious, deaf or just bad taste in music?
    finally a mix by me
and what's this, another shoddy mix...another dull mix

Sometimes tracks that are indicated as being in the same key don't sound like it.
There are a LOT ways that keys can be varied from the standard that make them sound different.

Ultimately you have to use your ear.. sometimes you can go from HERE, to THERE.. and it sounds bad.. but if you go from THERE, to HERE.. it sounds great.
    It's all about the feeling.
