DXRs are very smooth sounding PA speakers when they aren't being pushed to thier limits, and they're not terrible sounding when in limiting.. but that is by PA speaker standards where there is more emphasis on protection than anything else. Does this system ever leave the house? If not you may be better off with passive speakers and a good class AB power amp.
    Hi: I listen to mainy rock(Godsmack,Roxy Music,Supertramp,Boston,Kansas,Fleetwood Mac,Dire Straits,Gov'T Mule.
System has never left the house.
Sounds good at low volume but female voice(Stevie Nicks) and some male(Steve Perry) really bugs me at high volume.Thanks,H50

Your Oppo deck may be sitting towards top shelf for quality, but your sound system is only as good as the weakest link.

As above, if this is a house system, you're much better off with Hifi or a good passive+amp combo.

By the way, I have heard those speakers in full action for live situations many times with many bands and/or PA purposes. I have actually sound engineered the thing over one gig with a top of the line Soundcraft mixer, alongside to the guy who built the mixer as a prototype in development who was pretty much briefing me on how to use it. Not to blow my trumpet, but I can vouch for these speakers, the sound is awesome. If you can spot a clean one second hand, then it's happy days.

You've got great taste in music by the way. Squeeze a little Pink Floyd in and we're good.

Well I'm familiar with the music at least... I'm from the same era. I'm a bit surprised you find Stevie Nicks harsh, I was listening to her through my DXR15s a little while ago and thought they both sounded really good. FWIW I don't recommend using any of the contour settings on these, I like it set flat.

But maybe these boxes just aren't powerful enough for you. Do you have an EV dealer near you? Maybe have a listen to the ETX. In a side by side comparison of the whole lineup I did the ETX stand out as the smoothest and loudest, and they are definitely more powerful than the EKX series which are the equivalent of the DXR.
After that the options tend utilize larger format compression drivers which can sound really good, they sometimes don't have the highend extension of smaller drivers but the flipside of this is the highs tend to sound more controlled at higher SPLs. I find that as SPLs go up that I prefer a slight downword tilt to the spectrum, perfectly flat speakers just sound too bright.

Maybe I am doing something wrong with the volume on my DXR 10 speakers, plus RCF sub...I run all three at half volume(detent)position...should I run all three at full volume?...I have a sub controller on my P6 pre-amp...maybe that is my problem?!
Not all Stevie Nicks singing gets me,just a few on Rumours(Chains) Thanks,H50

If you hear distortion on the same tracks at the exact same spot in a recording every time chances are it's in the recording.
Do you have the DXRs high passed?
Nothing wrong with the way you have the gains set, turning them up will just raise the noise floor and create more hiss.

    Hi:
I have both main and sub x-overs on my pre-amp set at 80.
DSP on rear of 10's..D Contour-OFF
    HPF-OFF
    Thanks,H50

You should be using a high pass with a sub, but sometimes the sub has high pass outputs.
If your RCF sub has that, then use that. If not, use the one in the tops.

But.. that would affect the sound of the mids and midbass, not the highs.

Sorry...what do you mean by "high passed"?
Right now I have XLR Main outs on pre-amp to each of the tops and the XLR sub out going to sub,
    X-overs are set at 80 on both x-overs on pre-amp. H50
