It would probably be OK, depending on how much bass you want and how loud you want to play. Seeing as it is in your home and not in a club, you'll probably not be pushing the limits of the sub. If you put the sub in the corner you'd gain a few dBs of SPL, but in your case you could probably compensate for that by just turning the sub up a notch.
For best results you need at least two subs, on opposite sides of the room. With only one sub the sound will be different everywhere you stand.
Thank you all for the comments and input, it's certainly given me quite a bit of food for thought and a clearer idea of what I want to do.
