DAW for mixing, mastering, playback and bouncing in 16 Bit rate.

    Hi guys!
Thanks for your help on beforehand.

I'm going to copy, cut and paste some 16 bit / 44.1 khz wave chiptune tracks, to make compilations.
And it's imperative that all the steps through the session/mix process, to final output bounce are in 16 bit bit depth!

Is there a DAW, and modern OS that can be set to this, or has 16 bit depth natively throughout?

16bit 44.1Khz is red book standard (CD standard). So basically any DAW / modern OS does this straight out of the box.
Audacity is free software that does this job.
bored, curious, deaf or just bad taste in music?
    finally a mix by me
and what's this, another shoddy mix...another dull mix

You will never want a DAE (or DAW) that only operates at just 44.1kHz sample rate at 16 bit depth. You will want the tool to operate a significantly higher resolution to maintain fidelity while you edit. Once you finish editing, you can export (aka render downwards) to 44.1kHz sample rate at 16 bit depth.

Just to clarify, you should be looking for a Digital Audio Editor (DAE), not a DAW. A DAW would be tremendous overkill.

Edit: Pete isn't stupid... at all.
