Making "visualizer" videos for YouTube etc

    Hi folks.

Do any of you do this?

I'd like to put some music on YouTube and would like some fairly simple visualizer effects (eg like windows media player does).

I suppose I could play my track in wmp or something and do a screen capture, but that seems a bit clunky.

Does anybody know any good apps for doing this?

i do some of this for our parties. i just loop videos, gifs or whatsoever which i edit (distortion, glitch, blur etc.) with different apps and then combine to one long movie.

best IMO is "glitché" app for iphone/ipad. it does some cool effects on videos. or use it with pictures and make gifs of them
"Defekt" app is another one i use. or "hyperspektiv".

in general you can use any app that does some effects like caleidoscope stuff etc.

for me, this is an easy way to create my own visuals rather than playing some youtube video rips. yeah, its not perfect but i like teh DIY sytle and its far more personal than any other video you could get

Making "visualizer" videos for YouTube etc

When I first started DJing, I thought I’d project music visualizations on a screen behind my booth. I bought the screen and projector, as well as the Magic Music Visuals software. The software allows you to build your own visuals from provided patterns or your own; or you can even use pictures. It’s pretty cool. I never used this capability because it takes too much time and too much gear to set it up (for an old dude like me).😊

    Thanks for replies.

I am really looking for something that is dead easy, and ideally free.

Manu - Milkdrop looks like the kind of thing I imagined, but from a google search I can't figure out how I actually make a video file with it. It looks like a plugin for winamp maybe. Are you able to fill me in?

Carlnap - Glitsche looks cool for making little bits but I am definitely going for minimal effort here. In my mind, I launch an app, tick a few boxes, import my audio and export a video file with automatic visualization

Bobcat - magicmusic looks OK although the presets on their gallery page a bit basic and maybe a bit of work to achieve anything better? Also not free and I am tight!

Yep... not free, but very versatile. Like I said, if you don’t like the canned patterns, you can make your own. You can also get patterns from other software users.

... But if you’re looking for “free” it’s highly doubtful you’ll find anything that’s very good. Good software is not typically free.

Indeed it's a winamp plugin. I can't remember thee specifics, but you can run a live sound input into it. Grabbing video and/or video editing requires different tools

    I'm a milkdrop fan.

The way I'd do it would be to have the sound output going into the line-in on your PC (you could play the track from your phone connected to the computer for this).
Then set winamp and the milkdrop visualiser (its all free and standard when you download winamp) running to accept the line in as the input, and on fullscreen.
Set your video capture program to record your screen.
Play your track on your phone or whatever.
Save, then edit the video when the track has finished.

Milkdrop is very versatile and programmable with presets and even your own pictures etc.... its really a rabbit-hole of crazy stuff that's all available free online.

    Here's how to setup line-in:

If you want to use your sound card's Line-In or CD Audio inputs for
sound data (instead of mp3 files), you can do this. Do the following:
    1. CONNECT WIRES
Connect your audio source (a stereo, a live feed, whatever) into
the line-in (or microphone) 1/8" jack on your sound card. You
might want to test & verify that your cable is good before doing
    this.
    2. SELECT SOUND INPUT CHANNEL & ADJUST VOLUME
In Windows, double-click the speaker icon in your systray (where
the clock is). Then, on the menu, go to Options -> Properties
and select the "Recording" option. Then make sure the Line In
(or Microphone) input channel (whichever is appropriate for
your case) is SELECTED (with a check mark) and that the volume
is close to, or at, the maximum. Hit OK.
    3. TELL WINAMP TO USE LINE-IN
Open Winamp, and hit CTRL+L (the "Open Location" hotkey). Now
type in "linein://" as the location you want to open. (Leave out
the quotes and make sure you use FORWARD slashes.) Hit PLAY
('x' key for the lazy), and the little built-in oscilloscope (or
spectrum analyzer) in Winamp should start showing your signal.
    4. RUN MILKDROP
Run MilkDrop as usual. If the waves are too small or large,
either adjust the volume from Windows' Volume Control, or adjust
the sound level at the source.
bored, curious, deaf or just bad taste in music?
    finally a mix by me
and what's this, another shoddy mix...another dull mix

same issue and I would recommend the same setup. I'm been using Winamp for yrs.. and still do, it's my main audio player.
