    What is real deep house?

Long story short, I went to Ibiza and now my music taste is very screwed up especially around deep house. I am now becoming very confused with what is real (and good) deep house and what is just plain house so here are some songs I consider deep house. I would really appreciate it if somebody could tell me the difference and tell me how good these deep house songs are out of . (Also does anyone know of a place to get real deep house music because beat port is not very reliable...)

Deep House covers a huge range of styles, from soulful vocal and piano classics to stuff that is bordering on minimal / tech house.

Deep is in the eye (or ear) of the beholder.

If it sounds deep it is.

Think 105-125 Bpm, minor 7th chords and a soulful funky groove. This is a wide criteria and there are lots of examples that will break those rules too.

I see, but do you know of some places where I can find real deep house music? (or at least as close as possible)

I'm not sure what you mean.

Where? You can get deep house music from anywhere you can get lots of music. Spotify/Soundcloud/Deezer/Itunes/Beatport/Juno/Local record store etc etc

But the point I am making is that deep house music means different things to different people. For me I don't think I'd call any of the tracks you posted deep house, possibly the last one, other people may attach different meaning. They are just words I suppose.

Quick google came up with a good list of what I would call classic deep house. Maybe this is "real" deep house?

    https://www.discogs.com/lists/30-ess...lassics/147394

Bringing more up to date, I would say most things on Smallville records. Stuff by Moomin, Borrowed Identity, lots and lots more.

But why are you worrying about this? Find music you like, then find more music you like. The pigeon hole is not important.

Traxsource is one of the best places to look for new releases and older stuff as well. Some people advertise their releases on deephousepage forums too.

But on the subject; a coarse definition would be that deep house is the music played through a Bozak mixer by a guy wearing a fedora.

Another is that it's played at festivals by bearded guys in their 30's that look like lumberjacks.

Ishkur's guide to EDM described it as the music you can imagine playing in the background on a Sunday morning when your dad walks around with the newspaper under his arm wearing a morning jacket and slippers while smoking a pipe.

So I think the difference is in how rebellious the music is, although deep house is sort of "intellectual" rave music in a sense that it can be traced back to minorities and political ideas but rather than manifesting it strictly through music it uses very subtle messages, unlike in hip-hop for example which is probably it's closest 4/4 urban cousin in EDM idealistically and in terms of ravey-ness.

The newer stuff is called "future bass" or future house, I think it comes from the contrast that the fedora guys use a vast arsenal of old school hardware and live instruments whereas the new wave uses a few drum samples and a melbourne bounce-y Massive preset (check out pics of Fred Everything's studio to see what I mean)

Yeah, the examples you posted are what I would consider the new definition of Deep house. It's all been shifted a little, since a lot of the stuff called house nowadays, like Avicii, David Guetta etc wouldn't have been called house some ten years ago. It's the same with Deep house, it used to be a lot deeper. Deep house to me is mainly instrumental. If it's got vocals it's usally more soulful house, but a lot of people have different opinions on that. Often times it's quite jazzy, but like Dave Beep said, it's quite a broad term that includes quite diverse music.

Here's one of my favorite tracks, Francois K - Hypnodelic:

One of the tracks to be labeled as Deep house was Mr Fingers - Can You Feel It:

Then there's tracks like Kerri Chandler - Atmosphere

    This is deep house

    everything else is less-deep house.
bored, curious, deaf or just bad taste in music?
    finally a mix by me
and what's this, another shoddy mix...another dull mix

Cam here to say the same. From my experience, i had an easier time finding deep house, least the style I would consider 'real' deep house, on that site compared to others. Maybe its just coincidence since I do come across good deep house tracks on BeatPort.

As I mentioned in another post, today's deep house style is different from what you heard back in the 90s and that's just because different styles have merged becoming something new but rather than have a million sub-genre labels, i guess you go by feeling - deep.

There's plenty of new stuff that sounds more like old deep house than this minimal deeptech stuff though.

If you like this stuff search for "float house" too.
