I have two rack systems. One (I refer to as my Small System) is a 2x8U molded plastic rack that sits on a table top. The second is a two piece molded plastic rack with 4x10U top section, and a rolling base section that’s 6U (I call my Large System).
Functionally, there’s not too much difference, except for the number of microphones and number of supported PA speakers, plus the Small System has no built-in light control capability. The Small System is lighter, so it’s the system I use for venues where access is difficult.
Here’s my problem... My Large System has no tabletop space; nowhere to put notes or set a drink...
... I’ve used a stool or folding table as needed, but don’t like either of those options. They look tacky, because the floating facade I attach to hide the wires and such is not wide enough to hide much besides the rack...
So my plan is to add a tabletop. I have drawn up a design and just need to go buy the materials...
... It will be made of solid wood, and though it’s gray in the diagram, I’m actually planning to stain it ebony, and coat it with some polyurethane. It will have 4 knobs, which will tighten to the top of the molded plastic rack for stability. I’ll provide more details and post pics of my progress.
