Pioneer to leave the DJ business

"Despite dominating the industry, the Japanese giant faces serious financial woes. Japanese financial websites are reporting Pioneer is getting out of the DJ business.

After selling over 85% of its DJ subsidiary to investment firm KKR & Co. in 2015, both parties are now in talks to offload the entire stock to new buyers, reports Nikkei Business. The report goes on to say bidding has already begun with an expected price to land between 60 billion to 70 billion yen, which is upwards of $500 million in US currency.

Pioneer DJ, the subsidiary created during the original sale to KKR & Co., had sales of over $200 million in 2018 despite the parent company making net losses in 2016 and 2017. According to Nikkei Asian Review, Pioneer DJ controls between 60 and 70% of the global share in DJ mixers, turntables and other products.

Despite the dominance of its DJ arm, Pioneer is currently restructuring and was recently bailed out by Baring Private Equity Asia, a Hong Kong buyout firm, to the tune of $930 million. Japan Times reports that the deal involved laying off 3,000 employees, which amounts to some 15% of Pioneer's total workforce."

I know I'm in the minority, but I've never really appreciated their DJ products, or their marketing strategy.
Still, they are an icon in the DJ realm, so it is sad to hear this news.
bored, curious, deaf or just bad taste in music?
    finally a mix by me
and what's this, another shoddy mix...another dull mix

Pioneer to leave the DJ business

I own a couple of Pioneer controllers, but I don’t use either as my primary DJ controllers... I use Denon MC6000MK2’s. But... I hope Pioneer survives in some fashion under new ownership somewhere, because they DO have some good products, and the push other manufacturers to make better products in order to compete. Lately, Pioneer has priced some pretty good products VERY competitively, which keeps prices of other’s products down to some extent.

Calm down everyone. Pioneer DJ isn't going anywhere. It is owned by two companies, KKR & Co and Pioneer Corp (15%). Pioneer Corp is divesting and will leave Pioneer DJ to KKR & Co. or some other company.

    Carry on.

No no no. Pioneer Electronics, the former parent company of Pioneer DJ, sold 85% of the company YEARS ago and have been minority stakeholders since then.
Now they are considering selling what little stock they have left.

So yea, Pioneer DJ will still exist and probably nothing will change from our perspective.

What would make me really happy is for Pioneer Electronics to buy back Pioneer DJ and do something about this Rekordbox crap. But that's not going to happen.. the reason Pioneer Electronics is selling stuff off is because they're in financial trouble, which sucks.. but it has very little to do with Pioneer DJ at this point.

And that's what happens when a company overprices it's stuff for decades because it's sitting on top of the gear game. People have moved on, two recessions and competition has launched a few competitive products in between.

Add to that the sneering customer service attitude from pioneer. On their forums, people asking for advice regarding any sort of malfunction were told to ship it in and be billed pioneer maintenance prices... Turns out most people are not made of money.

Technics has a DJ mixer, a DJ CD/Media player, and a DJ controller in their current line up?
I know in the past they had a DJ CD player & a DJ mixer. But I only know of the SL-1200MK7 DJ turntable in their current line up.

(Yes I know you were joking, but still.)
But the number of US Supreme Court judges was always 6.
    Then it was 5, then 6, then 7, then 9, then 10, then 7, and then 9.

What do you not like about Rekordbox? I bought a pioneer controller in part to get it.
