DJs! What do you look for in a song when making setlists?

Other than BPM & genre, what elements of songs make you go “YES!” and put it in a mix?

The sound, feel and energy of the song.

I like to have a wide variety of tracks spanning across genres and make little mini mixes that represent a feeling or mood and find tracks to connect those moments.

Mods moved this? I am asking as a music producer with only small party DJ experience so I don’t know whats people move in the clubs and or what makes a dj buy your track, I’m asking so I can incorporate those elements into my own music.

Your post was not specific to adding sound samples within a track and / or producing a track and / or remix.

Making a whole track and/or remix that you can sell, is a whole different kettle of fish.

There was a sticky thread right above yours that answers the question in detail.

It's not just a matter of going "YES" and make a killer remix on instinct, because everyone is different. Learning sound production helps, and there is no set formula. I have heard lots of stuff that makes the producer go "YES", and everyone else go "MEH"

I am moving your thread back, if you feel that your question is more related to production, but I would suggest you to refine the wording. Your title alone addressed DJs instead of producers, asking them how do they pick songs for a set list. Not what producers do to produce something.

It was so that myself and other producers could learn what works in a club environment to help shape our tracks.
