Yep... I bought a Pioneer DDJ-WeGO3... and I think I like it. DON’T LAUGH!😄
I’m a mobile DJ and I have two rack systems (one Large and one Small) that I use for a variety of events. The Small System is used for events where access is difficult (I.e.; upper floor and no elevator) or when no dance lights are needed. Both rack systems have Denon MC6000MK2’s mounted in the top.
So why the DDJ-WeGO3, you might ask? .... Backup. The backup for my Small System was a Surface Pro (tablet) attached to a NI Audio 2 DJ (external sound card), which attached to a mixer. The Surface Pro has DJay Pro 2 software, which was fine (as a backup) for playing a few tracks until I could get my main computer/controller back up after some sort of failure (freeze-up or reboot). My big concern was what I would do if the main computer or controller failed and would not come back up during an event. Mixing for 3-4 hours on the Surface Pro would be a challenge... not a fun one.
So I started looking at compact controllers like the Numark DJ2GO and the Pioneer DDJ-WeGO, and I discussed this topic with other DJ’s who have used these “toys” as primary or backup devices like for (wedding) ceremony systems or for small house parties. For me, space is a BIG issue. I have a 30”x30” table, so there’s no space to setup a backup system. It has to be able to attach to a robotic arm that’s connected to my rack (intended for a laptop PC). Here’s what my system looked like with just the Surface Pro...
The WeGO is almost the exact same size as a laptop, so it fits on the stand (robotic arm) nicely...
The thing that really impresses me is this little controller actually works (and feels) pretty good. The jog wheels are almost the exact same size as those on my MC6000MK2’s and they feel substantial... not like a toy. It makes using DJay Pro actually usable... even enjoyable. I run Traktor with my main systems, but I could easily use this little setup for an entire gig if I had to. The WeGO is a little flashy (unnecessarily so), but it has what you need to mix with.
So you might ask why I bought the WeGO3 instead of the latest WeGO4? Well, the WeGO3 has 3 EQ knobs (Hi, Mid, Low), where the WeGO4 has only 2 EQ knobs (no Mid), but has a Filter knob. The WeGO4 comes with a Rekordbox license (the WeGO3 has Serato), but I use neither of those. If I want to try Rekordbox at some point, I can always purchase a copy then. I bought my WeGO3 on eBay for $152.99. It was apparently a gift for the seller’s teenager who tried using it 3 times, then put it back in the box. It came in all the original packaging complete with all the cables, works perfectly, and not a scratch or a mark on it anywhere. Great deal! As a functioning, useable backup, this little controller ROCKS!😊
