I like the reaction. I call it Artistry to make something that goes beyond the original implement. So in the case of a "scratch macro", using it to do something beyond just the scratching sound it was intended for. I don't know what... but I'll make an analogy.

Back in the mid 80s, someone thought that the squelch of the cutoff frequency and extra resonance on the TB-303 sounded cool - even though the original sound was intended to be a bassline. That cool sound launched an entire genre (acid house, for those who don't know) and inspired many others. THAT is what I meant by Artistry.

I only hope that the "scratching macro" inspires something. I am somewhat sceptical, but if only a new generation of turntablists emerge, that would be cool too.

I've read the books like How to DJ right... to learn about... beatmatching, phrasing w/e , Speed Test Scrabble Word Finder Solitaire but when I go to mix...

Well first, Jazzy Jeff didn't have to prove anything so I doubt he actually cares. I love and admire the guy's achievements but instead of pushing today's generation in learning what's right and proper, he just tells them to buy a cheaper alternative and just push buttons for easy scratching. Second, he's obviously paid by Serato to help them develop something like this. Then of course, he'd promote it and tell everyone that he's the brains behind it. Certainly the kids who'd use this feature and refuse to learn it (same with auto-sync) would praise him for making another short cut.

I've seen and still see so many wannabes doing the same old boring thing, pressing buttons, letting the program sync mix for them and just throw their hands up in the air. The craft of DJ mixing is mixing music by manual beat matching, manual scratching, manual/random music selection depending on your crowd reading. Knowing how to set the mood when dong opening set, knowing what to play when doing prime time and sustaining the vibe when doing the last/closing set. Not auto-sync, auto-scratch, auto-playlist and auto throwing their hands up in the air like they just don't care.

    scratching buttons...

soon to be joining punch buttons, transform buttons and FX buttons on every DJ mixer you never want to own.

apart from airhorn. that never gets old, and every DJ set needs it at least 100 times.

bored, curious, deaf or just bad taste in music?
    finally a mix by me
and what's this, another shoddy mix...another dull mix

The photocopy machine is a tool. Would you consider a portrait that has been photocopied and exhibited in a museum an art?

Thank you. I doubt he has the tech and programming skills that would enable him to get a job for Pioneer R&D. A bit like Dr dre makes headphones, Or Jordan makes trainers. Or Paris Hilton makes perfume(on top of not DJing).

No... they can never go too far. It's a toy. Use it as you will. Those that matter will know. Quite a useful learning tool.

What Jazzy Jeff did during his generation wasn't right and proper according the rules of the elders of his time. Sampling orchestras and "playing" the turntables? Blasphemy.

    Jazzy's elders weren't turntablists.
