    People who make one post...

I notice there's a lot of people who come to this forum, make only one post and then never come back.

    It's kinda bullshit.

I'm a member of another forum where we all basically require every new person to post in the introduction forum. If they guy doesn't first introduce himself, we direct him to the intro forum and avoid answering his questions. If he refuses to introduce himself, he takes a lot of shit from all of us.

We need to advise these new guys to first head over to the intro forum. When they introduce themselves, it's more likely they will become a member of the community rather than just coming here to pick you brain real quick and leave.

Just my 2 cents on this....

The way we moderate over here works so far. We eliminated 100% of the spam after I came on board, using a new specific set of rules.

Rules indicate that if your first post is a link etc, you will get a warning. But we also apply leniency towards new members who are asking for some help to ID a track, newbs posting their first little mix in the beginners section, or fathers/mothers that will post once asking what should they buy for their kid, etc etc etc.

I have seen some forums and/or other social network pages that will require you to present yourself, but it's simply not the policy over here. You have a choice to make an intro, or not.

If he refuses to introduce himself, he takes a lot of shit from all of us.
We don't take the time to be incendiary towards newbies, we spend enough time moderating as it is (there is a lot people don't see), let alone having to monitor extra trolling or flame wars, that is not the policy over here. We are glad to help within what is reasonable.

That said, we have strict requirements in place regarding posting mixes, promoting and marketing music/goods, and posting in the wanted/for sale section. What you don't see is the amount of spam being deleted on a regular basis, fake vuitton bags, cheap crap from the east, fake discount listings, porn etc. We work around the clock on that.

But I'll let the admins expand on that...

I just ran some quick numbers. Since last year, there are about 650 members that have joined and have posted at least once. About half of those have posted more than once.

DJF is a ****** place. Even so, it took me about 6 months to warm up and start joining in because I was intimidated with all the others who had vastly more experience than I did. Turned out that I shouldn't have been intimidated because every DJ starts somewhere. I was lucky to find DJF as it helped me tremendously. I'm not sure if I would have been so open to posting if I thought there could be a downside.

You're right that exceptions should be made for parents asking questions and perhaps track ID inquiries. But IMO, it's not right for DJ's to come here and pick your brain with no real intent on ever becoming part of the community. A person should show a genuine interest in DJF you're going to start asking DJ questions about how to do this and that, what should I buy, etc...

How many times has someone come here, started a thread, received several responses to it but never post ever again? One-and-done posts of this nature isn't cool.

If you don't want me suggesting that newbs make an intro post, I won't. I'll admit I never made one when I joined many years ago, and I should have, but my intention was always to eventually become an active member. I think I've shown good faith on that.

I am. I just think it's not right when someone comes into my neighborhood, lets their dog take a crap and not pick it up.

How are we equating people joining a forum, then for whatever reason not being around for the long term as the same as dog crapping on a lawn? I know I'm the first to be "DJing with anything other than vinyl is not DJing" but come on now.

It's more like somebody moved in next door/down the street from you and keeps to themselves/doesn't create problems.

I do agree people should hang around more but it is a complicated situation for it to be fix.

Steve, let me see if I can help you. Nothing I say here should be taken as rude. We appreciate any & all ideas to help make the forum better. Of course not every idea &/or suggestion is going to be accepted for various reasons. We (the admins) try to look at every suggestion & see how it will affect... positively, negatively, or neutrally the forum & its members ...... over all.

Now firstly, understand that this forum is first, a "help forum" for DJs, potential DJs or the general public to come here & ask DJ related questions.
Secondly, this is not a social platform. While we try to build & encourage a friendly platform, where each member should be able to be himself & provide only as much personal information about himself as he feels comfortable doing. Again, this is a help forum, not a social forum.

I completely understand your point where people introduce themselves but we will not force anyone to give information about themselves before posting. Additionally, not every person needs to introduce himself. Its sometimes irrelevant. Some members are not DJ related but do have a question about the industry. We feel that every question is important & should be addressed. If grandma wants to by little Johnny a mixer for Christmas/birthday, its irrelevant for grandma to post in introductions prior to posting her question(s) for assistance. Our first & primary objective here is to help grandma make the best choice she can, based on the info we provide.
Just recently, a new member posted that he is not a DJ nor does he have an interest in DJing but he is employed by a school system & he was asked to DJ the school prom. He asked about speakers. Its irrelevant that he post in introductions prior to being helped, which is our primary focus here.... to help & assist with questions & answers concerning the DJ industry.
This gentleman nor grandma, will ever be back & will not pursue an active membership here, does not need to introduce himself, but still deserves to have his questions respected & addressed.

As far a s rules go, we try to be lenient & I dont say much because again, I try to go along with the majority... whats in the best interest of the forum, but foul language is a peeve of mine. While we are lenient, & I go along with the program, I wont tolerate continual & constant foul/bad language. Everyone is welcome here including children & ladies. I dont appreciate bad language in front of either. Just so you know......

"#2 - Keep cursing, swearing, profanity, or vulgar language to a minimum in ALL parts of the forums. People of all ages, races, and lifestyles are welcome on DJF, so please be respectful when posting. Habitual vulgar language will lead to a warning, infraction, time out, or banning. DJF will not tolerate profanity or indications of profanity in thread titles. This includes partial words with characters such as @#$%&* in them."

Suggestions are always welcome. On this occasion, I have to say this is a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. Secondly, I have enough to do as it is as a mod, that would only add to the time I already spend, then having to redirect people towards an introduction and monitor everyone on top of that.

People don't realise that for every bit of moderation taking place, there is a log report being typed behind the scenes. I really don't have the time to keep an eye on every single new member and tell them they have to post an intro, or face this and that. Then it would end up being a big pile of introductions that almost nobody would read. If this was applied, people would make an intro thread asking their question, or make an intro thread then one question thread and leave.
