I know this sounds silly and confusing but if you're aware of the scene related to a certain genre you'll be able to tell by the way people are dressed.

Age and some social aspects are a factor too I'd guess, such as whether people come in pairs or groups.

Jokes aside, you gotta pretend like you're deaf and just watch the crowd. If you don't see much energy or excitement, change the song. If you see em going crazy, keep playing similar songs.

Unless it's still early and a large proportion of the crowd are still socialising. The last thing you want is to hype that group of 10 rowdy lads that have just walked in who are going to make everyone else leave.

Again... Time and place. I do like you're deaf comment though. It's the little cues we should look for and don't peak too early just because it will work. What will one do after? Unless of course it's a fast turn around venue, where you want them out as quick as they came in. People can get equally bored from tunes they actually love. DJ's need to be good at foreplay.

For those customers not enjoying it, it might be better to not change the songs. They might not be the customers the venue envisaged. The venue might be working towards a longer plan of musical reputation. It's better for you that they go else where.

I always looking at people if they are dancing or not. If you see the crowd is emptying it means the music is not that really good. Don't mean that the music is not good but not for your crowd at that moment. Every crowd has a different opinion of the music.
