Question At What BPM Do You Like To Record Drum & Bass At ?

DJF Junglists, need to pick your brain!

I've just finished recording a project I've been working on and recorded it sticking to an 88.8 (177.6) BPM tempo (I'm a lil OCD lol). I uploaded it to SoundCloud as a private track for testing and gave it a listen on my Jaybirds. Everything sounds great. Then I get home after work yesterday and tried giving it another run on the Samsung sound bar + Sub. I might be high but, it kind of seems like the sounds are being stretched.. like taking an 85 (170) bpm track and speeding it up to 88 (176)... that phasing, dragging, sound. I believe most, if not all, the tracks in the mix are within the 86 (172) - 87.5 (175) range so I don't expect there to be too much stretching, but I'm still what you call "green" so by all means lemme know if I'm being stupid with that expectation. I've seen people DJ live at 89 (178) - 90 (180) BPM with the sound being crystal clear though, so is it just because it is a recording? Or what are the variables here? Is it due to the device I'm listening to the mix through? Or is it simply just too fast? Please, any guidance would mean a lot. Thanks!

Also, I would love to know what BPM ranges you prefer to record and play live at and why.

(PS: This was recorded using a DDJ-SX, MBP and Serato internal recording software)

    Thanks again folks.

Drum and Bass is like to 160 to 180 bpm.
Are you reading your BPMs from software?

    I usually play around 176bpm.
bored, curious, deaf or just bad taste in music?
    finally a mix by me
and what's this, another shoddy mix...another dull mix

Yes, thank you.. x2 and you have actual BPMs.

Any reason for that BPM in particular?

I learnt to mix on drum and bass years ago.
I found it hard to mix quickly so I learned all the pitches to put my records at, so they mixed together.
It just happened that the base track I used was "Dub Moods" by Aphrodite, at 176bpm.
    So it kinda stuck.
And for me it always felt the right tempo. Not too fast, not too slow. Most DnB mixed with it, although some slow tracks needed speeding up a bit.

I see, okay. Thanks for that Pete.

I wonder if there is an ideal BPM for Drum & Bass though.....

Or is that too much of a subjective thing.
