I'd like to believe this, it does make sense but the more I think about it not so. An amplifiers output stage is analogue not digital. The distortion you are referring to (if true) would be down to the amplifier input not the speakers.In terms of overdriving, I'd just like to point out that mp3 files distort quicker than CDs when you push the volume up. At some point the artifacts just don't translate in the speakers,

Actually it's not even the amplifier. The distortion would be at the 1st D/A. So if what you say is correct (which i believe so), simply don't push the signal at that stage. Use a bigger amplifier at a later stage.
