Mobile Jocks: The Official "What Gig Do You Have This Weekend" Thread

Club jocks play clubs every week (generally speaking). They play clubs, that's what they do. Mobile jocks, or at least me, we play any & everything from weddings, school reunions, birthdays, holiday events, company events, etc. I have even played a memorial service... kinda like a funeral for a gentleman who was a Mason/Shriner who was cremated. So, we do all sorts of events.

What are you doing this weekend?

    I'll start -

This weekend, we have a company Christmas party that we do every year for a large (world wide) employer here in town. They rebuild small & large rollers for paper mills. Some of the rollers they rebuild require truck & trailers with sometimes, like 10 axles.

We have been playing their Christmas parties for several years.

My next gig is a social club annual event. It's like an award show with dancing afterwards. This event is usually held at a hotel so if I stay late or weather is bad, I'll stay overnight.

It's a great gig and I've been fortunate to do it for 3 years now.

Friday night I had a live sound & lighting gig for a local theatre group that I belong to. Local talent perform songs and skits. Great time and change of pace. Next weekend a corporate Christmas party for a local hospital.

My work hired me again for our annual holiday party. Although it was fun, my hands felt really tied this year. I was told just a few days ago that the venue doesn't allow anyone to bring their own speakers. I had to plug into the house system, which consisted of overhead speakers built into the ceiling. These were the kind of speakers designed to be at a volume people could talk over. Hardly any bass, no where near the volume we needed. On top of that, the venue insisted that all of the house lights stay on. I have a pretty nice lighting setup, but the 'classroom style' house lights really ruined any kind of atmosphere that we could have had.

On a positive note, I've been slowly gathering music videos, and this place had 7 TVs though out the room. So although I don't have any screens myself yet, I was able to play music videos for the first time at a gig.

Despite the crappy speakers and the forced house lighting, people did dance and had a great time.

Did staff Christmas parties the past two Saturdays, which were a bust. People aren't partying as much as they used to. Not sure whether it's increased drinking & driving laws/awareness, busy family life where a Sunday can't be spent hungover, or a corporate culture where nobody wants to cut loose in front of their boss & colleagues, or a combination of all the above.

Next gig is a NYE wedding (a first for me) at a cool venue. Sharing the music duties with a live band (also a first).

I have learned over the years that after 3 or 4 company Christmas parties, employees become bored with them. Same thing over & over every year. Not really always the same event but the same company, the same people, the same bosses, the same....
The first 2 or 3 years a company is in business, are the best parties. After that, they tend to get boring, slower & slower, less & less people.

The one I played last weekend is always an easy gig. I play Christmas music for about 2 hrs through arrivals & dinner. After that, it's usually games like bingo, then basic drawing ticket numbers for gifts, etc. After the gifts are all gone, I get to play some dance music for about 30 - 45 minutes. By that time, since gifts are gone, so are the guests. Its a really easy gig. They keep having me back year after year so I keep doing them. Good people, just slow for me.
