Scratching and More?
Hey all!
Like the category states, I'm a Beginner and would like to do some scratching/mixing. I checked a few other threads that had some recommended gear, but were offered for a different purpose. I appreciate any suggestions.
Based on what I've seen, I would like to stick with Serato and two vinyl turntables. I really want this setup to be for scratching as main priority, but I assume I could simply use it to also mix. It's my understanding that I could use two vinyls connected to a mixer that connects to my laptop and I can load my music onto each deck and scratch on a 'dummy' record...? am I right on that?
If so, your suggestions on which decks, which mixer, starter speakers, and Serato compatible only. Also, will the needles that come with the deck be sufficient?
I'm not made of money, but I also know that cheap gear will be exactly what I pay for... cheap.
Thanks in advance! I look forward to picking your brains!

your right about how serato works. the records actually have a tone on them.
the question you would need to answer is what is your budget?
I would recommend Technic 1210's decks, but other will suggest others.
as far as mixer, there are a fair few options from cheap to expensive.
give us a budget and we will be able to point you in the right direction with decks and the mixer.
Remember you'll need some headphones as well.

Thanks for your reply TheRabbitMonk (RitM reference? lol) I have some decent headphones that I can use at the moment.
I would say $700 total for both decks and $400 max for a 2-channel mixer? I guess $1100 without Serato. My buddy keeps trying to get me to get a DJ controller because I guess it's much easier of a setup, but I just like the feel of my fingers on a vinyl. Hope that doesn't sound weird lol... its hard to explain.
What I need + my budget:
2x Decks - $700 (maybe Audio Technica AT-LP120's? they go for about $300 each)
2-Channel Mixer - $400
Serato DJ Suite - $300
What I have:
Speakers - Mackie CR3
Headphones - Sennheiser HD 7
Other/Misc Needed?
Cables $100
Hope this helps! Also, note that I'm not trying to earn money or use this to host parties or anything. This is mainly for practicing and personal use.

If you like the feel of vinyl, that for you is for sure the way to go. I was addicted for years. Even the lil click noise a 1210 makes when you press the start stop button, it is sound unique to itself. Don't buy anything else, it won't feel them same. If you learn on other turntables you will have to learn again. Only when you get real good can you jump from different decks. Personally I prefer bend buttons over platters now, it gives me more control but everyone has their preferences. If you want to do scratching nothing will compare to a spinning vinyl.
If you buy a second hand pair of 1210's it will be an investment, they won't lose price, you will get back what you paid for them, if not more, if you decide to quit.
Edit: that been said, those AT might be very similar in feel.

DECKS
This is a decent deck but only one of them and the products discontinued but is built like a tank, looks in very good nick mind.

slightly over budget at $770.00, but you won't get much better and they hold there value.

through my life I've only really used these two decks in any length, so can vouch for both.

MIXERS
Right I'm massively anti:
Numark,
Gemini,
and I would steer clear of them as they often have bad reviews or people have bad experiences.
With anything you pay a decent buck for, always look up reviews before buying.
I'm of the believe that you pay for what you get. so usually spend a bit more than I want to ensure I've not got something bad because I intend to keep it for a few years.
Below are some ideas, I've not used a lot of these mixers if I'm honest but often read or hear good things.

also check craiglist, guitar centre (always here ppl from the U.S getting good deals there) and be careful. don't be paypaling ppl money with no confirmation. just take care.
You wants something with a decent fader because being a beginner you will be very heavy handed at first.

My needles, and cart of choice. will not skip unless you really heavy handed and still I don't think they'll skip.

shop around, could get cheaper as well.
Again there are other options out there, so again read up on stuff.

Another thought get a certified Searto mixer and put what you willing to pay for the mixer with what your willing to pay for Serato together.
Also consider Traktor, there both pretty much on par in my eyes.
Google is your friend, google the question. 9 time out of 10 someone will of had that exact thought.
