I have used Toshiba's, Compaq's, HP's & I dont know what else over the years. All running windows. I've never had an issue that I can recall.

I am currently running a HP as a main, a HP for 2nd set up (& back up) & an Acer back up. All running Windows 10.

I'm happy with ASUS. They're pretty reliable I'd say.

Never fancied it personally. Struck me as similar to trying to fit an elephant into a Mini Cooper.

Unlike building desktops, building a laptop would cost more than you could buy one for, and the complexity would add a lot of time (labor) to the build. However, though I have a laptop as a backup, but my main PC's are rack mounted ones I built myself in 1U cases, and I have 22" monitors mounted to my controller case.
If I was buying a laptop, I think the Dell Latitudes are pretty good. I was not a Dell fan, but after many years of being required to buy them on State contract, I was impressed with how bulletproof they are. The Inspiron is not so good, but the Latitude's are.

The main costs of building a laptop are those of plasters to put on your fingers which have been shredded to ribbons, I'd wager.
