Thread: Your Feelings on Mashups?

    Your Feelings on Mashups?

I can see how a lot of people feel like it's sort of lazy, or cheating. In some cases, these mashups could definitely be done live with just 2 tracks. Obviously, with a premixed mashup, there's no risk of the messing up the timing live, and it might sound better if it was produced. If someone was using it to work in an additional track, I think a lot of people would look at it as an efficient way to mix 3 or more tracks (one being a mashup, and the others being from separate tracks).

On the other hand, some mashups are done really well and in more complex fashion (isolated instruments, for example), without making it sound like a fake live mix. Basically, no possible way to mix it that way live.

I enjoy them immensely when done right... not sure how its lazy if thats what you want to do. See GirlTalk - loved his All Day album, but I recognize it for what it is.

Mash-up is basically a remix of song to me, so its fair game .

I don't care, now if they play a mash-up and claim that they mixed it .

Nah I think Girl Talk falls into that category where the production is a lot more complicated and couldn't be replicated live, but sometimes you'll hear a mashup in a set where it's basically just jumping back and forth between two tracks, or an acapella is used over the main track and just a couple of sections are repeated.

I like it, and I think it's an interesting way to spice up a set or fit more songs in. Some instances though, it seems like it could just as easily be mixed.

I was just talking about mash-ups in general... and Girl Talk does perform his stuff live, just all his stuff is pre-edited for what he wants to do with it, so far as I've understood it.

everyone knows what a mashup is and most people are well aware that DJs just play a mashup and dont make them on the fly. you can usually tell the difference anyway. Go for it! i find they area great way to integrate music styles that wouldnt usually be appropriate for dancing. EG for older crowds, or for making that singer hit more dancy

The issue with making mashups in the studio rather than mixing live is an issue of mixing them and leveling everything off. There's no way you could sound as good doing it live.

I don't think it's lazy. The fact that someone made a mashup shows that they're putting more effort in than many people!

If I was regularly going to play a blend of songs A and B then I'd just make a mashup in a DAW, cos then I can tweak it and edit it so it's just right. I love mixing instrumentals and acapellas live too.
