How many of you use request sheets?

I am wondering how many of you mobile guys do this? I usually have my wife there to jump between me and the requester so I am not disturbed while in the mix. I was thinking of putting a request sheet out or a sheet that shows all the songs that I have with me that night that people can choose from if needed since I don't take my whole library of songs with me. Only ones I will be using plus some extras just in case.

Also how many of you put your music on the laptop and how many onto a external and run them off that while gigging? I did try my external once and I kept having issues so now I just load what I need on the laptop. I know I have seen a thread like this on DJF 1.0 before but I can't remember what was favored more.

No request sheets, unless: (1) its a bar gig -- OR-- (2) its a school/teen dance

I always put out a request sheet. Often it is just me, and if I'm actually trying to mix, talking to someone else, talking on mic, etc... it gives the option to just write it down. I will always talk to someone though if I'm not busy, or they can wait.

I have 2 hard drives on me that are kept current and mirror each other. I also always have both my laptops with me, with basically 500 or 600 "most played" songs on them already.

I like to take guest requests myself, I like the personal interaction. The only time I have request sheets is when a couple gives them to me to use. On the occasion that it does happen, it can be fairly entertaining to go through them later.

I had a wedding last summer where a bride gave me a request box, stack of index cards, and sharpie markers to help me with requests since I was up on a tall stage. At the beginning of the night, requests were legible, and were included name and artist. As the evening went on and people drank more, handwriting on the cards got worse and the songs they wanted to hear became more difficult to figure out. I got requests for LAMFO, cupd shufel, and, I'm not kidding, "that sh**y dance song" (Not sure if I ever ended up playing the actual song they wanted). I saved a few of the cards, and will post them here if I can find them.

I tried using an external hard drive for my music for a while, but it just got to be too much of a pain when transferring and backing up music. My laptop's hard drive is plenty big enough for my music, I just use externals to back it up now.

    Thanks guys!

I do like talking with everyone but I try to also have my wife with me to take requests just in case I am busy. I was thinking of using a sheets to help me out on also figuring out what is requested the most at parties and get more of a feel on what that age group likes the most.

I have a request sheet so I don't forget and I'm the one usually writing the song down.

For school events I do a Twitter Mix.

They follow me @EventProLive and tweet their requests. Then, the DJ works the applicable ones into the mix.

I use a request note pad for requests, but seriously most can't even spell the names or don't know the correct names of the songs. I use a request sheet, but it doesn't always work because people will stand around and start humming songs for you to figure out. I smh because they don't even know the works either. I just say I have no idea what you're talking about. I really try to have them just use the pad so I don't have to have a conversation while I'm working.

Some people even other vendors couldn't careless in you're working they still try to carry a conversation with you.

I have all my music on an external hard drive and it's plenty fast. I use a 800 firewire plugged into my 8gb mbp and it's ligthing fast. It's like it's on my hard drive without slowing down my mbp.

For a wedding, could a request sheet look tacky?

I use Virtual DJ and I love the little waitlist on the right. Whenever I get a request, boom it goes right there.
