...and here's me buying cheap second hand egg speakers cos the missus will think they don't take up too much space in the lounge and will go well with all the other wierd shape lounge speakers I have...

But home cinema is losing it's appeal to me. It's a bit like swimming pools or camping cars...great in theory but I'd never get the use out of it to make it worthwhile...

However... old cheap british lofi hifi, I'll always hunt out.
bored, curious, deaf or just bad taste in music?
    finally a mix by me
and what's this, another shoddy mix...another dull mix

Aaaah you got some eggs, I'm guessing not Fabergé but I have a suspicion of what you might be on about (KEF or Cambridge Audio?). No such thing as of the shame of buying second hand gear and not calibrating them to suit in your own cinema system, that's your missus mission given to you. To be honest in your case, she thinks it looks good and she expects you to fit it in

My living room is full of tiny old second hand Jamo Omega 1s, a couple of them refurbished by myself, and they do fit in the background - to give you an idea. If you make them sound good and you enjoy the movie without thinking of the speakers, then it's job done

A home theatre (HT) discussion??? I have to jump in!

I've loved HT since Dolby Digital came out in the mid-90s. After demoing Dolby Digital in a store, I bought laserdiscs, a Yamaha top-end receiver, and a 5.1 Miller & Kreisel speakers system. I loved it.

Of course, in the late 90s, DVDs came out and I was all over them. Same with Blu-Ray. Along the way, Dolby ProLogic IIz was introduced so I expanded my then 7.1 system with the new two height channels. That's right, I was sporting the beta for Atmos with 7.1.2 before it was a thing!

For everyone reading, that is a lot of speakers. Star Wars and Matrix movies rocked! As a side note, the wife acceptance factor was declining over time.

We eventually moved and I've decided that 5.1 is really where the biggest sweet-spot is for most. To this day, I cannot see how people use soundbars when 5.1 discrete speakers are orders of magnitude better.

So now I have a nearly 30 year old 7.1.2 setup with 6 speakers being used daily and 4 in storage. The receivers have changed over time because of needing new codecs and features (i.e. HDMI, eARC, etc.).

It's been fun and now I wish that the streaming services would focus on sound codecs instead of just increasing video resolution.

I have 11 speakers just for the front, and no wife

Currently looking if I can get another 2 heights for the back (since I now have a wireless option), not sure when I'll find a good deal, but it's in the cards - for now my rear Jamos are upfiring at a slight angle and do the trick while my dipole speakers are filling up the sides... I literally just saw there is a new Matrix reissue ''Ultimate Collection'' 4K boxset including the Animatrix and Resurrections, smells like I'm buying it again soon.
