The S4 will work as traktor decks controller, when djm900 will replaced the S4 mixer with additional effects to play with.
Yes, with S4 itself should be able to handle most of the work, however due to inaccuracy sound issue in S4's knobs when playing music as standalone device, i prefer to hook it up with external mixer like DJM for better accuracy. With external mixer like DJM900 means plenty more rooms for creativeness and improvement in my mixes.

You should definitely keep the S4. It's a fine controller and it will surely come in handy some day.
On the other hand, as mostapha said, you can surely do better than the djm900 with 2k. a xone db4 probably?
