Actually if your cash price is $1,200, your barter price should be at least 150% of that. So at a minimum, at least $1,800 worth of groceries. (Myself personally my barter price for $1,200 worth of work would be somewhere between $2,000 & $2,500.)

A few years back (At least 10.) I knew a KJ who worked in the bars on Friday & Saturday nights for free drinks.

If you're the best in town then they should understand why you're worth more than a free meal. Don't give in. GWYW.

I say go ahead and DJ for food, but charge them a rental/labor fee for your equipment and time, let's say for the amount you would normally charge.

But to put it in perspective, your time is money, and DJs that give away their services for little or nothing are making it very hard for DJs that do it for a living. To me if the client is unwilling to pay for your services and you do the job for free, and the let's say the bride spills champagne on you power sub and it shorts out, do you think a none paying client (bride) will be willing to pay for the damage? be ready for a fight for the funds.

Such comedy...I wonder what kind of shenanigans they pull with the photographer or the caterers.
