    Native Instruments New Kontrol D2?

Last night at WMC, Native Instruments threw a party were the previewed their new toy presuably named the Kontrol D2. It appears to be the deck section of a Kontrol S8 with 4 additional buttons at the top which is thought to be for deck selection (4 deck control).

Here is the setup they used last night

And here is the write up over at DJ Tech Tools: http://www.djtechtools.com/2015/03/2...potted-at-wmc/

    Thoughts?

I suppose that this is expected given the S8... but was anyone asking for this?

In the meantime, people have been asking for modular S2/S4-based single jogwheel controllers... and a four-channel Z4 mixer. I guess that those won't happen now.

NI seems to be going for DJs who want to be fully-dependent on a beat-grid and giving Serato everything else. I just don't get it. Yes, there's a little lock-in due to the remix decks, but are the remix decks really the future of DJing? I have the F1 and really like it but it's not what I center my performance around. Besides, without flexible beat-grids, how can you be fully dependent anyway?

NI is going down a solitary path. It's a gamble. I hope it works out... but this path does seem to alienate its core TSP users.

pretty much what i thought when i saw this.

My thought is that there trying to get a way from being dependent on decks etc.

I get the feeling that it hurt them to have there controller etc associated with other companies decks because they don't currently do there own.
This is to try and remove the element all together. Just a thought.

Every time I see a video of a new product, I see one of two types of demos, either a guy scratching his ass off, or a guy pressing a bunch of buttons. It seems that Serato has the scratch guy, and Traktor has the button pushing guy. Just once I would like to see a demo of a guy mixing two songs together.

I get what you are saying. But this is using songs and stems from songs and then loops and fx on deep layering that I think is where the next breath of fresh air is going to come from. When there is something that not every one can buy and automatically be good at. At least for dance music. Hip hop needs wax.

And then on top of the intuitiveness you have direct competition to the industry standard. What if the industry standard was to bring your own shit, at the most a legit night club could only have a high end mixer. But even then these are so compact so the idea of 2 D2s adn a Z2 is not that bulky to pack and travel with.

I don't think we are in that era anymore. DJing (as in the traditional sense of the term) has merged with production, live automated instrumentation, as well as song broadcasting/play-back. I think to call "on the fly processing and manipulation of songs" (for a lack of a better term) DJing, really isn't DJing. What users are doing these days is something else. I think there simply isn't a popular term for it. The term DJ holds status. The guy pushing buttons doesn't. That's why we continue to call whatever we are doing now DJing rather than to call it something else.

What is button pushing guy? Is a he a DJ? He's clearly not spinning a disc.
