Unforgiving, unrelenting, unrecoverable double beats!
Once the wife and kid are asleep... the DJ awakens
I've been mostly digital for around five years now. Still it's fun to spin some ole records every now and then.
I have a bunch of lasers, a black UV light and a shiny disco ball too.
The CDJs and mixer have a massive and totally unfeasible flightcase that is supposed to make these things portable. It does no such thing lol
I play boat parties here in Dubai (I move to Rotterdam in December) so a hoping to play out a bit more when to get there.
So i started out on a pair of Gemini belt drive TTs and a Behringer mixer in about 1998. Upgraded the TTs to Vestax PDX2000s (amazing decks!!) and then the mixer to a beautiful Vestax PCV275 in 2000. I am actually thinking about buying another one second hand as it is such a beautiful bit of kit and might be nice for a change to use it now and again as the DB4 is a beast but sometimes you don't want all that to play with you just want to slam the faders and batter the killswitches if you're playing some hard house or something (which i still have a soft spot for).
First CDJ was a CDJ800 in about 2002, got a pair of those and rocked them until 2004 when i got myself into hideous amounts of debt by buying a pair of CDJ1000s and a DJM600 which at that time was the business. I loved the CDJs but the mixer felt cheap and a bit uninspiring compared to the big Vestax so i sold the DJM600 after about a month and bought an Allen & Heath Xone 92 which i had until last year.
I upgraded the CDJ1000s to CDJ900 and then CDJ2000 over the last couple of years and was going to get rid of them completely and focus on the DDJ-RX which I bought last year. Then I gave my head a wobble and stopped being so stupid, and kept the CDJs AND DDJ-RX. Simple fact is I just don't enjoy the little controller that much. Its a nice bit of kit, it just doesnt get me going like the CDJs do. Cant really explain it.
I bought a pair of Audio-Technica DD turntables recently partly to play my LPs and partly because I want to get back to spinning some vinyl when the mood takes me. Its a fun thing to do at house parties etc you know? Also (and I have no empirical evidence to back this up) i think keeping your eye in with vinyl makes you a better DJ technically. Ive never used the Synch buttons on the DDJ-RX and I never will but the old art of beatmatchhing does suffer a little on the CDJs as you just get a bit lazy.
Last addition is the wonderful DJS1000 which I absolutely F****** love. What a beautiful bit of kit. It adds a whole new level to playing tunes. You aren't just playing other people's tracks any more you can edit them and add your own samples, layer things over the top and play with things - isnt that what it is supposed to be about? Pissing about and having fun?
There is nothing else I want in terms of the setup. Next step would be to buy a Mac desktop and a synth and start actually producing my own tunes but i'll leave that until i get to Rotterdam!
Peace.

Some opinions and thoughts -
* CDJ2000 NXS/NXS2 is an unbelievable piece of kit and goes far beyond anything I could dream of on the CDJ800/1000 early days. That looper is just magnificent. You'd have to be totally nuts to want to get rid of them in favour of a MIDI controller in my opinion, but then i'm much more into playing the tunes for people to people with people rather than entertaining my mates with what's on my laptop. I get why others do it and I almost did it myself but i just don't think its as much fun.
* I actually prefer the Xone-92 interface and (controversial) i prefer the analogue sound, especially in the filters. I love the DB4 but it took a long time to love, though i liked it immediately. Having the EQs up at the top and the FX in the middle still doesn't seem right to me somehow. However, I think if you change the top EQs to Filters H/L as the DB4 lets you do it does make a lot of sense. I've started using mainly the filters to mix with instead of the EQs and rarely touch them now so it is a little less counter-intuitive if you do it that way. I prefer the 92 because it is a truck. Ive had drinks go over my old one, one time it fell out of the back of the car onto the concrete. It just kept on marching. I like the DB4 and certainly it is very well built but it doesnt have the heftiness of the 92 and i doubt would stand up to the abuse I (unintentionally) gave my 92. With that price tag though, I am not gonna find out any time soon.
* I prefer using two sets of monitors instead of a amp and speaker etc. I find that if you have your booth monitors facing you turned with the low bypass down and the high bypass up, then the other pair facing away but with both the high and low turned up and the volume a bit louder than the booth monitors you get this lovely rich spread of sound that really rocks the room. Not that my lounge is very but ya know.
* Decksavers are expensive but the best thing since sliced bread. Struggling to imagine having decks not protected with them!
So the old pics got lost somehow so here they are again -

Nice set up Perry!
I concur.
@PerryCombover
How are you liking Recordbox? Was it your first programme or did you switch to it?
I downloaded RB to organise my files, as recommended by Mojaxx, but I didn't really get on with it, not sure why just one of those things. I don't have any RB controllers but I was toying with the idea of getting the INTERFACE 2 to try it out with my turntables. It's priced very competitively compared to the equivalent Serato set up and if I ever find myself in a big club situation (very unlikely, but you never know) at least I'll have a handle on the software, if not the CDJ's.
