A 1200GLD with scribbles on it that *most* people don't recognie is not a collector's piece. As I said before, someone could pay $10k for it and cherish it but it still doesn't make it worth $10k.

I have a #71 of 100 kit signed by Henry the day he broke Arsenal's scoring record. I wouldn't sell it for less than $50k (as I'd buy it for as much as that being a fan). Doesn't mean its worth that, however.

That is an incredibly simplified understanding of the antiques market. Antiques still have market value, albeit their value is derived differently than calculating the value of the materials and labor involved.

So, one person who pays $10K for an antique (or 1200GLD with signatures) worth $2000 and then every similar antique (1200GLD with signatures) is worth in the ballpark - some more or less depending on who scribbled on it? (<- which was your second point).

When people start paying $10k for 1200GLDs with scribbles on it regularly, then the market value has been set.

a thousand a piece at the most. m5gs go for 500-700 a piece. Youre not gonna get much more than that. technics are in abundance and arent not in short supply like some people would have you believe(theres alot more out there than what people actually use, they dont break, tech has moved on, etc) You can still get a pair for about 350-400 on craigslist. sorry if that wasnt the news you wanted to hear.

I think those that are putting a high value on these turntables aren't looking at this objectively enough. Regardless of what is believed to be the value of the item in question, by either the seller or any number of buyers, the value is a slave to the mean of what the item has been sold for, and that is just to determine the average sale price which translates to the market value. However, because the item in question is generally only considered of face value or greater by the niche audience that appeals to this item, there is no guarantee that for the current time period you would actually get more, let alone break even, for the device in question regardless of what frivolous extras are included (signatures) - And this doesn't even take into account depreciation value. So really this is a question of adding the lowest dollar amount and the highest dollar amount and all the sales in between then dividing by N where N is the number of transactions, to determine an actual current worth for a range.

Simply put, these turntables are only as valuable as the mean amount paid for them, because there is no guarantee that you will get more and the audience that these items appeal to is a very small niche market, further bringing down the market capability since only a small percentage of the entire market would consider this item at the already inflated value pushed by the manufacturer's as the MSRP. The potential for a higher take is possible, but with any type of memorabilia, collector's items and antiques, it's always 2 major factors; how many are available (produced - attrition/destruction = total available = supply) vs who actually wants said items (buyers/audience = demand).

If there is still a large amount of these turntables available, and only a small audience who desire them, you would be lucky to get face value considering that the market still has many available. I am not familiar with this niche market and how much money is available for the "collectible DJ equipment" market, but I couldn't see them pulling even as much as MSRP let alone more than that. I could see increases in value over the next 10-20 years, but even with Technics (Panasonic) no longer making the SL-1200/1210, there is still a large supply of both new and used turntables still available on the open market with many persons trying to offload their turntables to step up to new technology*.

This is my train of thought as well, although I don't even see $1000 as attainable.

No? Everyone wants to maximize utility (or in another word - satisfaction)...it's just ambiguous as to how one should measure that utility...
