    Soundcloud, Mixcloud, and Soundcloud's popularity.

    SO! *cracks knuckles*

Although they haven't made too much of a huge noise about it, Soundcloud has quietly poked at the fact that they're there to host original productions, not DJ mixes. However, it's obviously the most popular site for DJs to throw up their mixes at this particular point in time.

In the meantime, Mixcloud sits in the corner of the room, bearing not only a mix-friendly design, but also no limits on uploads. Yet, it would appear that DJs / listeners aren't particularly fond of getting off their butts and moving to Mixcloud. An example of this is the fact that while my Soundcloud page gets frequent [by my low standards ] hits, my Mixcloud, featuring pretty much all the mixes i've made, has scarcely any hits at all.

So, what do you predict the future of this situation is gonna be? Is Soundcloud gonna start really cracking down on DJ mixes with a similar fury that the US Gov has used to crack down on torrents and filesharing? Or, is it gonna continue to sit around, only zapping a few mixes a month like it appears to be doing right now?

I personally hope that the earlier occurs, because Mixcloud is a great site, and I think that if Soundcloud were to crack down, that would perhaps lead Soundcloud's DJs and mix-listeners to hop over to Mixcloud.

    Thoughts, anyone?

I don't think Soundcloud really cares. It's up to the government to decide whether or not they're okay with people hosting mixes on Soundcloud.

I use SoundCloud cos it's kind of the Facebook of mix hosting. I posted the same mix on both sites and on SoundCloud it had 2,704 plays while on Mixcloud it had 480, so obviously I'm gonna go where my mixes get listened to the most.

If SoundCloud becomes more restrictive then I could definitely see a mass exodus to Mixcloud. I've had 3 mixes blocked on SoundCloud for copyright infringement so far and it's a pain. I don't think that SoundCloud would want to become more restrictive because it cuts off a huge revenue stream for them (DJs paying for premium accounts to host mixes), but it depends if they're leant on by the rights holders and the organisations that represent them. I wouldn't be surprised if the rules are tightened in future.

Im in the process of developing my Mixcloud but will also continue using Soundcloud as long as possible. At the same time i think its also up to DJs to support Mixcloud more and get their audiences used to it and shift to it. Hence, maybe I will start posting only mixcloud links (although the mixcloud facebook player is not as easy and simple as the soundcloud one).

It would be interesting to see what happens to soundcloud if all the DJs are pushed off since thats the group most likely to pay for more hosting given that a regular mix is about 1 hour while a regular track is 4-5min.
Oh whats that you say? You wanna out check my soundcloud?

Mixcloud is okay, I prefer Soundcloud but I prefer Mixcrate over both.

Soundcloud....limited space and risk have your mix/mixes taken down.

Mixcrate.....greats stats, easy interface but horrible customer support and server problems. 60% of the time you receive upload errors upload and have to upload your mix twice. 10% of the time no matter what you do the site won't let you upload. I tried eight times once and just gave up. I decided not upload full mixes on that site anymore only sample mixes of less than 15 minutes.

Mixcloud...server problem as almost as bad as Mixcrate but even though I had to reupload three times once at least you can eventually upload a mix. Moreover the site has bad stats unless you're logged in they don't count when people listen to your mix.So you can have hundreds of people listen to your mix but since none of them are logged in it doesn't coun't those listeners.

House-Mixes/Urban-mixes: The site is horrible! You should only use the site as a last resort or just for marketing. It's a crappy fugly site all round however it's another free site to get your name put there.

Mixcloud needs to incorporate a download button, in my opinion. I think with a few changes mixcloud could be the premier DJ mix hosting site, it is not a bad site at all but a bit of hassle to operate both mixcloud and soundcloud so I just use soundcloud.

I think Mixcloud is geared for DJ's & people who want to listen to DJ mixes, Soundcloud is geared for artists & people who want to listen to their tracks. As a DJ and a listener, it's good to be on both.

(incidentally, I have different mixes on each, just to keep things fresh so people might be more likely to visit both, & not just one.)
