how far back can you listen to Rap until it starts sounding corny

so i was throwing on some lorde finesse

    "theres a party over here"

and my boy was like "this shit just sounds corny"

    i was like

but i kind of felt where he was coming from in that once you get to a certain era youre just automatically reminded of parodies in movies with the stereotypical rap pattern. like "ayo my names ______ and im here to say... i spit rhymes in the most amazing way....."

so with that said how far back can you listen to rap before youre just like "this is too oldschool for me"

I was listening to some Gangstarr today and did the same thing. I still love "Code of the Streets" though. I will still play some nwa, tribe, etc. Like you said, some of the older "classics" are just getting to the point where the really do just sound old. I'll always have a love for old school though. There's just something about that era.

Yeah, I agree that corny rap isn't an period specific thing. From 79 till present there has been corny rappers. One of the worst disses you can get as a rapper is when you are called "corny rapper"
Most novelty rap is corny. Like Rappin' Rodney (Rodney Dangerfield) Rappin' Ronnie (Dude that sounds like Ronald Regan) Rappin' Duke (dude raps like John Wayne). I wouldn't consider Lord Finesse in that category, he's pretty dope all around and as real as it gets.

Some corny raps I love too, some of the early 80s anti-drug raps were super corny but there is a playful innocence and somehow simultaneously a humorous seriousness to them.

That's just the newer generation coming into they own. Younger people than them in 20 years will be saying the same about them - I mean hell... this generation has nicki minaj & lady gaga....

Madonna and MC Lyte didn't act THAT crazy... lol

I think some early 80s hiphop gets on my nerves. Some though.
