RUN-DMC used my Gold turntables yesterday at SXSW in Austin!

So I'm sitting around Thursday night reading Facebook, and a DJ friend of mine from Dallas, (Joe Walker) puts out a request that a visiting DJ to Austin, needs a pair of 1200's for a practice session, for an upcoming gig they have at SXSW in Austin Texas. SXSW is a music event here in Austin Texas. It stands for South By Southwest, and it last for a whole week during spring break. He just needed to practice on them for a couple of hours. Nobody wanted to volunteer their turntables to a complete stranger, so I stepped up and volunteered my tables and mixer, since I live in Austin. So I send the DJ my number, and he calls me up a few minutes later. He tells me his name is DJ Charlie Chan Soprano, and he is the DJ for RUN-DMC. I'm thinking, "sure you are", because every old DJ I meet, tells me he used to work at Studio 54, and every old person I meet, tells me they where at Woodstock. I tell him I'll let him borrow my setup, but I got to be right there in the room to keep an eye on the tables. He said, no problem. So I show up at the recording studio the next day. A few minutes later, in walks in DJ Charlie Chan, and the whole band from RUN-DMC! It seems they wanted to practice their whole concert that they where going to play the following night! So I got to sit in the recording studio, with RUN-DMC playing their whole concert, 10 feet in front of me, with the DJ scratching on my Golden Bad Boys. They even paid me for renting out the tables. It was freaking awesome! Later on, they gave me VIP tickets to the concert, and I got to hear it all over again. I told DJ Charlie Chan, next time he comes to Austin, he can borrow my setup any time he wants! Here is a picture of Charlie Chan scratching his ass off on my golden bad boys:

He was impressed with the tables, and loved my one of a kind, polished and gold, custom Crane Laptop stand.

Here is the whole band, they are actually called DMC now, since Reverend Run, no longer tours.

Here is Mr. Darryl McDaniels, lead singer for DMC, and original founder of RUN-DMC.

And here is me and the wife, enjoying last nights concert.

I don't like to treat celebrities like celebrities, I just treat them like regular people, especially in a private situation like that. I think they prefer it that way. So no, I got no autographs. I did record 5 of their songs on video. Unfortunately, my camera recorded the sound coming out of the speakers, so the video came out great, but the audio is just speaker audio. I did have my digital recorder with me, and I probably could have plugged it into the output of their mixer, since I am the one that plugged in my mixer into their mixer, then I would have got studio audio, but that would have been sneaky. They probably would have got pissed off, and I probably would have broke some kind of copyright laws if I posted it.

Yeah, that's known as a bootleg isn't it. Something to show your friends and family still... Being me I would have asked the DJ to sign my slipmats, I know he wouldn't have minded, especially since you turned up with some GLDs.

Great pics Pano! Nice to have your 1200s used by Charlie. Like Manu said, you should have the mats signed at least.

But still great experience. Your 1200s just upped its value even more. Haha!

    Congrats!

I didn't get any autographs, but I did get Darryl McDaniels giving me a shout out in one of their songs, since I was the only other person in the room with them, and I have that on video, since I was recording part of their practice section. Anybody can get an autograph, but who else has a shout out from Run-dmc! But like I said, I'm not an autograph hound, I was just glad to have a camera with me, to be able to video tape the session. The name Panotaker I came up with a long time ago, because I like taking panoramas with my camera. That is why I always have a camera with me. I don't have a DJ name, I just use panotaker as my email address, and it just kind of stuck as my online name. Anyways, I had a blast, got some good pictures and videos, a shout out from a super star, and some great memories. The golden bad boys are probably worth more if nobody signs them, but it don't matter, cause I ain't selling! So the moral of the story is, if some out of town DJ needs to borrow some tables, step up to the plate, it might turn out to be a great story, and it could open some doors for you.

to be fair...their DJ was probably happier landing those immaculate turntables, than you were hanging with DMC

    its like that...
and that's the way it is.
bored, curious, deaf or just bad taste in music?
    finally a mix by me
and what's this, another shoddy mix...another dull mix
