I wear Sennheiser 280's over earplugs. The headphones block out a lot of sound, and the earplugs allow me to have one ear uncovered, or take my headphones off completely and walk around. You can buy earplugs with different noise reduction ratings. (NRR) Look for something lower than 30db, or go for the musician oriented ones.

    four things i have found:
    1) give the people what they want
    2) good tunes trump all, focus on having tunes that rock
    3) if a blend/fx/channel or whatever is going wrong correct it quickly and if you can't get out as soon as possible. if you are losing the blend hurry up and get over to the next song. it is hard to do for some reason we want to "fix" it and sometimes that just drags out the "horribleness". i do it and i have seen a ton of other dj's do it.
    4) while djing don't lose confidence, you got to learn to say "fuck it, on to the next one", if you focus too much on mistakes you will not be focusing on your mix.
