You really don't need a controller
Just a midi keyboard and do everything else in the box so to speak.
Trust me, I have loads if controllers etc, but doing all that stuff is So simple and precise in the software that they are unnecessary

i find drawing melodies to be extremely frustrating, especially at the beginning. I personally needed keys.
everyone learns differently though.
if you're on a budget, I would say get the cheapest 25 key keyboard you can find and continue to learn your software. then figure out what will help your workflow.

I've never felt the need for one... I'd say just start learning to produce without and see how u feel, you can always add it later... I think it would really only help people that can play piano. And I def cannot.

I'm trying out with the mouse (trackpad) and keyboard. I gotta say it's a little frusturating I just gotta get used to it.

I disagree, depending on the MIDI controller you get, if it comes with knobs and sliders, it can be really helpful at easily changing the sound of your synths and what not without having to do it with a mouse which can be irritating and you do not need to know how to play the piano in order to utilize it. In fact, I know quite a few people with MIDI keyboards that do not know how to play the piano.
