something i noticed about djing top 40

    this is just my opinion.

i have a top 40 edm remixes etc set on friday and tech, tech house, deep house, house set on saturday. the one thing i have noticed is spinning top 40 is so much easier. all you got to do is have popular music and people will dance, i just turn it up loud and throw popular song after popular song out there. the saturday set is much more about building the set and finding good music people haven't heard before and finding what is going to turn the dance floor on that night and getting the dance floor full and rocking. it feels more like i as a dj have done more and is much more fulfilling.

i noticed it once in a battle of the bands. some of bands rocked their own songs and maybe a hit or two. the winners did a bob marley medley. it thought it was unfair, cause i could rock a bar crowd, with enough drinks in me and my audience, with a bob medley and i can't sing or play an instrument. it really didn't say much about the skill of the band.

anyway as a dj both are cool, but i really like rocking non top 40 music.

Try playing originals and not remixes. Also it's called top 40 for a reason.

Top 40 is fun, I dont mind doing it once or twice a month. The most rewarding thing for me is when I throw out that brand new track (underground or mainstream) and it hits the dance floor like Hurricane Sandy.

top40 edm may be easier but top40 IMO isn't considered easy compared to EDM. Straight 128-130bpm with a distinct beat from EDM tracks is far easier IMO

True that! Play dance to what they know and top 40 is blasted all over the radio, and tv.

i play non remixes i left off a coma between the top 40 and edm remixes. anyway my point wasn't about the difficulty in mixing them. my point was that i feel like the floor is responding less to me and more to the pop music (which they have also put little thought into) and that crafting a set takes less skill least IN MY OPINION (which i also stated).

I do both Top 40 Remixes at my main residency and House/Tech-House for parties and festivals and I sometimes find Top 40 more difficult... When I drop a House set people won't know most of the tracks anyway so there is never a situation where I am missing something people want there is also no need to keep up with, or beat, the radio.

When a brand new song comes out in the Top 40 world you have to predict whether or not it's going to be a hit, whether or not to drop it as soon as you get it or wait until the radio makes it popular first, and so on... An example is a brand new track by a major artist that leaked to some select people and that I got my hands on through connections... Do I play it even though no one has heard it yet even though the artist is popular or do I hold off until they have heard it and it's actually released (this song isn't even on youtube as a preview yet)? I have been burned on the dance floor before by playing something too new that people clear off for yet a couple weeks later the radio breaks the song and all of a sudden the same people who left the dance floor before are now requesting it... That kind of shit drives me nuts... They'll take their cues from the radio and charts but not from me.

I actually find top 40 harder. It's SO structured you can't really do a lot with it to make it DIFFERENT from how anyone else would do it and when you're like, in that momment where your hunting through Cds and shit to find the song you KNOW will teare the roof off next, it makes it 1000 times harder to sample an accapella or something over the top where as other genres, you can take your time more.
