Thread: what are the dj time slots like in your area?

just did halloween night. the government is cracking down for a bit, we closed at 2:30. people were really disappointed. also we had a miscommunication and too many dj's were there, one too many. so we all just decided to tag team in two songs a piece worked out well. really is cool when everybody is just about the music and having a good time. hopefully the crack down won't last long. sure was tough catching a cab though.

I've been pretty lucky to play a big festival - regionally the most massive, important, and prestigious in 2010 and 2011. The guy that runs it has his pick of DJs for the event. He could have 24 DJs in 24 hours if he wanted - but he keeps it to a low number and each DJ gets to play two or three hours. Much better that way, much higher quality and continuity. Most rewarding events of my life.

Personally, I wish promoters in this area didn't book so many djs for one event. I'd love to hear a local play a 1.5 - 2hr set, instead of cramming so many djs on the line up and giving them 45min - 1hr sets. Back in the day there was this one promoter that gave the opening dj a 3hr set, then the headliner would either play for the rest of the night or for only two hours then someone else would close it out. I remember when I used to play for them I went through just about every style of D&B. That was fun.

For EDM parties, how do you guys feel about there being separate rooms for each genre of music? IMO, I can't stand it when there is a techno/electro/house/trance/dubstep/breaks/whatever dj on right after a D&B dj. Total mood killer.

Totally. Honestly, even with back to back dnb dj's -- one dj plays my kind of dark hard shit, the next plays super wonked jump up? That's just as bad, imo.

See for me, DnB ALL NIGHT, ok its probably ONE genre I can tolerate ALL night, but I NEED that variation of dark to light to party shit. BUT! A whole NIGHT of Trance, or Electro etc etc .. Couldn't do it! Itd kill me. I NEED that variety of House, to Techno, to Trance, to DnB, to Electro etc etc and so on and for it to work it needs to be done by awsome Djs who know ALL those genres inside out and can make them all work together and then, give them a whole night. Let them get crazy and interesting and shit. To me thats what makes the best parties and line ups. More Djs = Worser gig. Now I like 4 or 5 MAX

There's 2 or 3 places that may or may not be on most Friday or Saturday nights, at the moment it's not too reliable.

    Normal Club hours 10PM - 2PM

Promoter handled clubs will typically have 4+ DJs in that time slot cause the "promoters" really don't promote but rather book DJs that have a following. They do 30min to 1hr slots and get paid peanuts or just get a bar tab.

The clubs/bars that actually handle their own marketing will have 1 DJ for the entire 4 hours. If they do bring in guest/celebrity DJs the resident will open 10-11, and the guest will handle the peak and the resident will come on again 1-close.

The after hours clubs are going to be from 3AM to 7AM. These are all promoter run events, again 4+ DJs doing 30min. to 1hr slots. Maybe only one or 2 of the DJs will get paid peanuts, the rest will be doing it for free "to get the exposure" as the promoter would promise.

I'm not saying I don't like variation -- I certainly do; but as a listener, I prefer some continuity in the vibe throughout the night. Get me from where the last dj left off to where you want to go -- don't just fade out, drop into a completely different idea. Nah'mean?

same here. i prefer a night to be one genre or maybe two if they go well together.
